The popular Netflix series, A Man on the Inside, returned for its second season on November 20th. Though Charles (Ted Danson) and Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) successfully solved the main mystery in the first season’s finale, it’s great to see familiar faces from Pacific View, such as Didi and Cal, continuing to play a role in their lives.
I’m so excited about the newest addition to Man on the Inside – Mary Steenburgen! She plays Mona Margadoff, and the sparks between her and Charles are incredible. It totally makes sense though, considering she and Ted Danson have been married for three decades! It’s a brilliant move by the show, really tapping into what everyone’s loving in TV right now in 2025 – bringing real-life couples on screen.
A Man On The Inside, Nobody Wants This, & Matlock Feature The Real-Life Spouses Of Their Stars
Leighton Meester’s appearance on season 2 of Nobody Wants This, playing a character named Abby Loves Smoothies, got a lot of attention, partly because she’s married to Adam Brody. Her character, Abby, is an old friend of Joanne’s, and she’s hiring Noah to help name her baby. The funny moments when Abby playfully teases and ignores a confused Noah are a highlight of the show.
Though many people talked about her appearance on the podcast Nobody Wants This, it was a surprise to see Melanie Lynskey – currently known for her roles in Yellowjackets and The Last of Us – appear in the new Matlock series on CBS. Interestingly, Lynskey’s husband, Jason Ritter, also stars in Matlock, but they didn’t share any scenes together in episode 4 of season 2.
Julianne Lynskey played Debra Palmer, a character whose connection to Kathy Bates’s Madeline Matlock forms a key part of the story. Their scenes together have a lively energy, and Lynskey gets to showcase her comedic timing. This was particularly rewarding for Lynskey, who previously shared on The Late Show that she’d jump at any opportunity to work alongside Bates.
Season two of A Man on the Inside really nailed the practice of casting celebrity couples. Melanie Steenburgen’s character, Mona, wasn’t just a quick appearance for attention; she became a key part of the season’s storyline. It was a smart move to have her and another character start dating right away, skipping the predictable back-and-forth tension when everyone knew they were cast as a couple.
Television Relies On Star Power More Than Ever
The distinction between leading movie actors and TV actors has become increasingly blurred, and television is now looking for its biggest stars. Today, actors like Nicole Kidman often choose to star in high-quality TV series as often as they do in films, and even Meryl Streep, traditionally known for her work in critically acclaimed movies, is appearing on television more regularly.
This change is largely due to the growing popularity of high-quality TV shows, which typically have shorter seasons – often around 10 episodes or less. Because these shows require less of a time commitment, they’ve become much more appealing to well-known actors and actresses who no longer have to commit to long, 22-episode seasons to star in a series.
It’s so tough for new movies and shows to stand out these days – there are just so many! That’s why having a famous actor involved really helps. It’s like, I already know and like that person, so I’m more likely to give their new character a chance. It instantly makes something feel more familiar and interesting.
Ted Danson’s role in A Man on the Inside is a great illustration of how established actors can quickly gain an audience’s trust. Because viewers already knew and liked him from shows like Cheers and The Good Place, they were naturally inclined to root for his character, Charles, right from the start – even before the story really began.
As a movie buff, I’ve noticed a really interesting trend lately. Shows like A Man on the Inside aren’t just casting big stars, they’re casting their famous partners too! It’s more than just tapping into existing fanbases, though. It feels like they’re blending reality with fiction, bringing these actors’ real-life relationships onto the screen, which automatically adds a buzz and makes you wonder how much of it is real. It’s a clever way to get extra attention and keep the audience hooked.
