The new version of The Running Man had a weak start at the box office, and its financial future looks increasingly uncertain after the first weekend. Initial numbers show the film is performing far below what experts predicted for a movie of its scale, leading to worries about how it will do in the weeks ahead.
The new movie Running Man earned only $17 million in the United States during its opening weekend, according to industry data. Considering it cost $110 million to make, the film didn’t perform as well as experts predicted heading into mid-November.

Because this big-budget movie is a remake of a well-known title, it’s starting with significant financial hurdles.
The film opened worldwide with roughly $28.2 million in ticket sales. Although some countries saw decent attendance, these numbers weren’t quite high enough to generate strong early excitement for a movie that cost over $100 million to make.
Adding to the challenge, a large part of the film’s earnings from outside the US comes from countries where studios don’t keep as much of the ticket sales. This means that strong initial international numbers might not actually lead to a significant boost in profits.

As a movie critic, I’m hearing whispers that Running Man really needs to pull in around $300 million worldwide just to cover its costs – think marketing, getting it into theaters, and all the usual expenses for a big-budget film. Unfortunately, the way things are going right now, it looks like it’s going to fall quite short of that number. It’s not a pretty picture, folks.
Early audience reactions are somewhat positive. The film has a roughly 60% approval rating on the review site Criticless, based on initial feedback. This positive word-of-mouth could help keep ticket sales steady in the next few weeks, but because the film didn’t open very strongly, even good reviews might not be enough to significantly improve its overall financial performance.

The film’s slow start was also due to competition from other movies released in November. Now You See Me Now You Don’t was the top domestic earner, opening with over $21 million, and Predator: Badlands remained in the top three despite a significant 68% drop in ticket sales.
As more movies come out with the year coming to a close, ‘Running Man’ is now finding it harder to stay in theaters and keep audiences interested.
Outlook
The movie Running Man is currently underperforming at the box office, and unless it sees a significant increase in ticket sales internationally – especially in markets where the studio keeps a larger share of the revenue – its losses are expected to grow. These initial numbers indicate the film is facing tough competition and may not attract enough viewers to earn back its production costs before it leaves theaters.

The disappointing box office results of Running Man are a warning to movie studios and investors. High production costs, weak initial ticket sales, and limited success overseas created a tough situation for the film to recover from. With more movies being released, it’s becoming increasingly unlikely that Running Man will improve, and it’s likely to be remembered as one of the biggest disappointments of the season.
