Five years after finishing its 15-season run on The CW, the popular show Supernatural is back as a new comic book from Dynamite Entertainment. Written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Eder Messias, the comic continues the story of brothers Sam and Dean Winchester – famously played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles in the original series created by Eric Kripke – as they investigate paranormal events.
Considering the popularity of Sam and Dean, it makes you wonder which other beloved and close-knit duos from pop culture would also make great comic book series. There are plenty of other famous pairs from film and television that could easily be adapted this way.
Jules And Vincent Should Lead A Pulp Fiction Prequel Comic
Quentin Tarantino’s acclaimed film, Pulp Fiction, clearly shows the influence of comic books, starting with its title and the way it defines the word “pulp.” Therefore, it makes perfect sense that Tarantino would explore this world further through comics, and the ideal characters to feature would be the hitmen Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta).
A sequel is impossible – Jules retires at the end of the movie and Vincent doesn’t make it. However, a prequel showing how Jules and Vincent first met and worked for Marcellus Wallace would be fantastic. It would also give Tarantino the chance to finally show Vincent with his brother, Victor Vega (Mr. Blonde) from Reservoir Dogs.
Broad City’s Abbi And Ilana Could Lead Many More Awesome Manhattan Adventures
One of the most popular recent comedies on Comedy Central is Broad City. The show started as a web series created by and starring Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, and it’s loosely based on their own lives. In the series, Abbi and Ilana play fictionalized versions of themselves, navigating the ups and downs of trying to succeed in New York City.
The show ran for five seasons, concluding with Abbi relocating to Boulder, Colorado, but she remains in regular contact with Ilana. A comic book continuing their story, even with a flimsy excuse for them to be back in Manhattan, would be incredibly funny and a great way to revisit their adventures together.
Wayne And Garth Could Party On Forever In Their Own Comic Book
Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey) from the “Wayne’s World” sketches on Saturday Night Live are among the most beloved characters to come from the show. As hosts of their local cable access program, filmed in Wayne’s basement in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, they became iconic stars thanks to two hugely successful movies.
Wayne and Garth once appeared in a parody in Cracked Magazine, reimagining Wayne as Batman and Garth as Robin – a playful nod to their characters. Bringing that idea back could be a really fun way to launch an official comic book series, letting them have even more over-the-top adventures than we saw in the Wayne’s World films.
A Drake & Josh Comic Would Satisfy Fans’ Hunger For A Reboot
One of Nickelodeon’s biggest hits of the 2000s was Drake & Josh, a funny show starring Drake Bell and Josh Peck. They played stepbrothers who were total opposites, and their crazy adventures were always entertaining. Even though the show ended years ago, fans still hope for a revival – maybe even just a comic book!
I recently found out there’s a manga adaptation of the first episode, called Match Made in Heaven, which is pretty cool. But honestly, as a big fan, what I really want is to see more of these stepbrothers! Whether it’s flashbacks to their teenage years that flesh out their backstory, or a continuation showing how they handle life as adults, we deserve it! It would be amazing to see their adventures continue in any form.
A Dude And Walter Comic Could Be The Big Lebowski Sequel Fans Deserve
After the success of their 1996 film Fargo, Joel and Ethan Coen made a much quirkier movie in 1998 that didn’t initially do well with critics or audiences. But over time, it’s become a beloved comedy, largely because of its clever idea: putting a naive, pot-smoking character into a complicated detective story reminiscent of Raymond Chandler’s novels.
The character of The Dude received a sort of follow-up in John Turturro’s The Jesus Walks, where he briefly reprised his comedic role. However, it would be even better to see a full-fledged continuation as a gritty, old-fashioned comic book. This comic could follow The Dude and his bowling buddy Walter Sobchak (played by John Goodman), still as clueless and chaotic as ever. Just picture the new adventures The Dude might accidentally find himself in, and how Walter would undoubtedly make things worse!
Shaun And Ed’s Unconventional Friendship Should Live On In A Shaun Of The Dead Sequel Comic
Edgar Wright’s 2004 horror-comedy, Shaun of the Dead, cleverly reinvented the zombie movie. The film has a surprisingly heartwarming ending: the main character, Shaun (Simon Pegg), continues to care for his zombie best friend, Ed (Nick Frost), keeping him safe in his shed.
There have been two comic book adaptations of Shaun of the Dead: a four-part series that retells the movie, and a single issue explaining how the first zombies appeared. Now, over twenty years later, comics could be a great way to continue the story, perhaps with a new zombie outbreak that Shaun and Ed have to deal with.
Harold & Kumar’s Adventures Could Get Even Crazier In Comic Book Form
The movie Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, released in 2004, became the defining stoner comedy of the early 2000s, following the hilarious adventures of Harold and Kumar (played by John Cho and Kal Penn) as they try to satisfy a late-night craving. The film spawned two even more outrageous sequels: Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008) and A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (2011).
As a big fan of Harold & Kumar, I was thrilled to hear Lionsgate is planning a fourth movie in 2025! But honestly, while I’m excited for more, I can’t help but think a comic book series might actually be a better fit. These movies were always so wonderfully over-the-top and ridiculous, and I think a graphic novel format would let Harold and Kumar’s adventures get even wilder. It would really open things up and let their crazy escapades go in any direction imaginable!
A Bad Boys Comic Could Show More Of Mike And Marcus’ Days On The Job
Though many remember Will Smith becoming a huge star in 1996’s Independence Day, he first gained recognition as an action hero a year earlier in Bad Boys. This film, directed by Michael Bay in his feature film debut, paired Smith with comedian Martin Lawrence. The two actors later returned to play their roles as LAPD detectives Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett in three more films.
Rumors are circulating about a possible fifth Bad Boys movie, but a prequel exploring how Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett first became partners could be even more exciting. A comic book format might be a better fit for a prequel, avoiding the need to recast the iconic roles. In fact, concept art was previously created showcasing key moments from the series in a graphic novel style, suggesting it would be a visually appealing project.
Arthur Read and Buster Baxter Represent Modern Comic Book Fans
PBS is well-known for its high-quality kids’ shows, and Arthur is a prime example. The series, inspired by Mark Brown’s books, followed Arthur, a young aardvark, as he navigated everyday life. At its core, the show celebrated the strong and lasting friendship between Arthur and his pal, Buster.
Arthur and Buster were close friends who both loved comic books. This connection became especially meaningful when the show ended with a hint about the future: Arthur grew up to be a graphic novelist. It would be interesting – and fitting, given the story – if a new comic book series followed Arthur and Buster, presented as Arthur’s own life story.
A Comic Book Reuniting Mad Max And Furiosa Would Be Epic
Many fans consider 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road the best film in the series, and believe that Imperator Furiosa, not Max Rockatansky, is the true hero. Despite this, Tom Hardy delivers a compelling performance as Max, forming a strong partnership with Furiosa. Their unlikely alliance begins when they team up to rescue a cruel ruler’s five oppressed wives and help them find safety.
Miller plans to publish a four-part comic book series that explores the backstory leading up to the events of the popular action film. While Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was well-received, fans are particularly eager for a comic book that continues the story and reunites Max and Furiosa.
