The show has returned, but with a major difference: Liam Hemsworth is now playing the lead role, replacing Henry Cavill.

The decision to replace Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia sparked a lot of debate among fans. Although Cavill had issues with the role, Liam Hemsworth received backing from the show’s creators. Despite this, the change clearly affected the show, as Season 4 of The Witcher received its lowest critic score ever on Rotten Tomatoes.

The latest release received a 40% rating based on the first five reviews, earning it a “rotten” designation. Although the score may change as more reviews are published, this marks the first time any installment in the series has received such a low rating.

Critics generally give Netflix’s The Witcher a 70% rating, but viewers are less impressed, giving it a 54%. The first season performed better with audiences, earning an 88% rating – the highest of any season so far – while critics gave it a 68% score.

The second season received the highest ratings, earning a near-perfect 95% “Certified Fresh” score from critics, though audience approval was only 54%. Ratings declined in Season 3, with critics giving it a 79% “Certified Fresh” rating and audiences a very low 20%. Season 4 was recently released on October 30th, so audience scores aren’t available yet, but critics have given it a disappointing score in the low 40s.

Carly Lane, in a positive review, noted that while many are excited to see Henry Cavill’s debut, the fantasy epic offers much more than just his character, Geralt of Rivia. The review highlights that the story has always been bigger than just Geralt, and praised Hemsworth for delivering a successful take on the role, effectively replacing Cavill’s previous interpretation.

Kate Sánchez from But Why Tho? praises Liam Hemsworth’s dedication to his role, even while noting the show’s writing doesn’t quite live up to his performance. Her review points out that Season 4 starts off confusing, but improves significantly towards the end, with Anya Chalotra as Yennefer being a standout performance throughout the series.
