The show is now deep into its third season and, thanks to its success and some recent changes in the cast, there’s talk of a spinoff starring popular actor Jensen Ackles.
Executive producer Elwood Reid recently told Us Weekly that they’ve been considering a spin-off series centered around Jared Padalecki’s character, Russell. He admitted he intentionally included hints about a potential spin-off in the latest episode, hoping fans would start discussing it. Reid also shared that the upcoming two episodes contain several teases, and that Jensen Ackles and Justin Hartley have great chemistry together, playing off each other in an interesting way.
Reid talked about the dynamic between the actors Colter and Russell Shaw, who play brothers in the show. He pointed out that Jensen and Justin each bring a unique style to their roles, and they have great chemistry together. Reid added that he personally prefers working with Jensen whenever possible.
According to Reid, a potential spinoff isn’t confirmed yet because Jensen Ackles is currently busy with other projects. Despite this, Reid continues to jokingly ask Ackles about the possibility. He explained that Ackles is working on The Boys spinoff right now, but anything could happen in the future.
I included it in the show’s scripts and hinted at it to see how viewers and the network would react. I’ve always enjoyed writing scenes for Jensen, though.
