Hulu’s most popular movie right now is a suspenseful thriller, but it didn’t do well in theaters, earning just over $776,000. Despite the fact that Hulu is planning to shut down soon, it’s still a strong competitor in the streaming market.

Over on Hulu, they’ve got a bunch of Scream and Twilight movies in their top ten, along with the 2018 Halloween reboot. They even have something a little lighter for the family, like Hotel Transylvania, which is great.
Even though scary movies are popular on Hulu right now, the film 40 Acres is currently the most-watched movie on the platform. The story stars Danielle Deadwyler as the head of a family whose ancestors were African American farmers who settled and protected their Canadian land for almost 200 years. Now, they face a new threat when a militia group tries to take their home.
The thriller first appeared at the Toronto International Film Festival in late 2024, but it didn’t come out in theaters until this past July. It opened with just $241,296 domestically, showing on 340 screens. It’s likely the film was missed by audiences because July 2025 was packed with big releases like Superman, Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Jurassic World Rebirth.
The film earned just $768,905 in the United States and $7,690 internationally, despite costing $8 million to make. While it didn’t succeed at the box office, critics generally liked it. Currently, 40 Acres has an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 94 reviews, and a 94% audience score from over 100 ratings.
Ferdoa Abdi of ScreenRant praised the film 40 Acres, giving it a 7 out of 10 rating. She highlighted Kasi Deadwyler’s performance as particularly strong, and noted the excellent chemistry among the entire cast. Abdi also appreciated how the movie balanced its serious themes with moments of lightness, calling it “a solid family drama with relevant social commentary and action.”
The thriller has been gaining attention since its release, and R. T. Thorne has been nominated for Best Director at the 2025 Directors Guild of Canada awards. Thorne co-wrote the screenplay with Glenn Taylor.
