Maika Monroe has firmly established herself as a leading horror actress, often called a “Scream Queen.” While she’s currently starring in 2024’s Longlegs and the soon-to-be-released The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, she first gained widespread recognition for her role in the 2015 hit horror film, It Follows.
Someone asked me if they were starting work on the sequel this year, and honestly, I was as surprised as anyone! I asked around, but apparently no one knows anything for sure. It’s all a big mystery! As far as I know, they haven’t even started filming yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. I really don’t have any inside information, I wish I did!
The actress said they have everything they need to move forward, but coordinating schedules has been the biggest challenge. Both she and the director, David Robert Mitchell, have been working on other projects – he on a large studio film and she on her own commitments.
She hinted that things were looking promising, saying, “It feels like everything is falling into place, and I’m hoping it happens soon! I truly believe everyone will be thrilled if it does.”
I have to say, I was really surprised by how much everyone loved this one! The movie follows Jay, who quickly realizes she’s in serious trouble after a night with her new boyfriend – it turns out she’s been cursed. Critics absolutely ate it up, giving it a fantastic 95% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating, though audiences were a little less enthusiastic with a 66% score. What’s even more impressive is that it only cost $1.3 million to make, but it pulled in a whopping $23.3 million at the box office! Talk of a sequel started way back in 2015, but it’s finally happening – and the original director is coming back, which is fantastic news!
Maika Monroe Teased the Sequel Will Be More ‘Grounded’
While walking the red carpet for the new version of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, the actress shared some details about the upcoming It Follows sequel, according to Discussing Film. She said she received the script and loved it, adding that it takes a very different approach from the first movie.
Monroe explained that the initial version was more over-the-top and intense, while this version feels more realistic and focuses on the emotional struggles of two women. She also hinted that filming for a follow-up could begin next year.
The classic thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is coming to Hulu on October 22nd. The new version features Caitlyn Morales in the lead role, with Maika Monroe and Raúl Castillo also starring.
It Follows is streaming on HBO Max.
