The fifth season of the CBS comedy Ghosts kicked off by resolving a storyline that began in season one, but it wasn’t good news for some of the show’s main characters. The season five premiere followed Jay, Sam, and the ghosts as they dealt with the consequences of the season four finale, where they learned that Hetty’s husband, Elias Woodstone, had tricked Jay into a deal sending him to hell.
Jay and his wife were happily planning Sam’s book launch at Mahesh, but things quickly fell apart when Elias unexpectedly arrived. This caused Patience, played by Mary Holland, to dramatically reappear. Although the Arondekars managed to pass Patience’s outburst off as a publicity stunt related to Sam’s vampire novel, Jay was still bound by his previous deal with Elias from Season 4. Meanwhile, a new, potentially more significant problem began brewing in Woodstone, hinted at in the episode “Soul Custody.”
Ghosts Season 5 Finally Shows Pete and Alberta as a Couple
While ghostly helpers rush to protect Jay’s soul, a sweet romance is also blossoming. Pete Martino (Ricky Moriarty) and Alberta Haynes (Danielle Pinnock) are now officially dating, continuing the story that began in the Season 4 finale. At the end of last season, Alberta realized she had feelings for Pete after he’d changed. But when she told him and tried to kiss him, he was caught off guard and reacted with disbelief.
Pete didn’t reject Alberta’s feelings because he wasn’t attracted to her; he was already in a relationship with Donna, a ghost he’d met during Season 3. Just as it seemed Alberta’s confession would be awkward and lead to Pete leaving town, he returned and told Haynes he and Donna had broken up. This allowed Pete and Alberta to finally share a kiss, hinting at a blossoming romance that will be explored further in Season 5.
Ghosts Set Up Pete and Alberta’s Coupling in Ghosts Season 4
Fans of the show Ghosts know that Pete and Alberta’s relationship goes way back – Pete has been interested in Alberta since the very first season! While Alberta initially wasn’t interested – famously shutting down Martino’s advances in Season 3 – things have changed. After Pete gained the ability to venture outside the house, sharing exciting new experiences, the two have become a surprisingly good match.
Alberta and Pete have a complicated history, hinting at a potential romance. In Season 1 of Ghosts, Alberta admits to Pete that she’d like to date someone like him, but she’s hesitant, and Pete is pretending to date Nancy. Despite this, Pete never truly lost his feelings for Alberta. Even after finding a girlfriend who resembled his celebrity crush, Loni Anderson, and proving her innocence in a murder case, his feelings remained.
Pete and Alberta’s Romance Has a Disappointing Twist
Despite finally seeing Pete and Alberta’s relationship develop on screen, there was an unexpected misunderstanding. Alberta was eager to tell the group that she and Pete are now officially together. While Haynes was happy to share the news, she was also worried about setting the record straight. The other ghosts mistakenly believed Pete had turned Alberta down, as he vanished after she publicly confessed her feelings, leading them to think he didn’t reciprocate.
Things got even more complicated in the season finale of Ghosts. To keep Patience from disrupting Sam’s book launch, Alberta impulsively confessed to having romantic feelings for Pete while undergoing Patience’s embarrassing shaming ritual. The entire group overheard Alberta’s confession and joined in yelling “Shame on you!” As a result, she was eager to announce her and Pete’s happy news, but also felt a strong need to repair her image after the public humiliation.
Pete was reluctant to share his news, as he always prioritizes others’ feelings. He worried about how it would be received, knowing Sam and Jay were already dealing with a very serious and dangerous situation. He explained to Alberta that he remembered sharing his wedding announcement with Carol (Caroline Aaron) in a Kiwanis newsletter, and it had been overshadowed by bad news, resulting in negative reactions. He didn’t want to repeat that experience.
Pete’s decision to delay announcing their relationship only adds to Alberta’s humiliation. Despite initially suggesting a song to celebrate, she reluctantly agrees to wait. Throughout the episode, Alberta endures continued teasing from the other ghosts, and while they eventually reveal they’re a couple, she’s repeatedly embarrassed. Sadly, their happy news is overshadowed by a disagreement that could threaten their budding romance.
Alberta and Pete are quite different people. Alberta tends to focus on herself, while Pete prioritizes others. This difference in their personalities creates tension for Alberta in the Season 5 premiere of Ghosts. It’s unclear if this will be a single disagreement, or if, like Pete’s previous argument with his ex-wife Carol, it will become a recurring source of conflict – and potentially, romantic drama – throughout the season.
