It seems history is repeating itself even in the world of Star Wars. Just like Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, Kylo Ren initially appeared as the main villain but ultimately redeemed himself and died a hero in The Rise of Skywalker. However, actor Adam Driver apparently wasn’t satisfied with that ending. He recently shared that he pitched a potential movie continuing Kylo Ren’s story after The Rise of Skywalker, and he had even secured a highly regarded director for the project.
Adam Driver has said he wanted to revisit his Star Wars character, Kylo Ren, as early as 2021, feeling the story wasn’t fully resolved. He shared an idea with director Steven Soderbergh, who, along with Rebecca Blunt, developed a story outline and presented it to Lucasfilm. Lucasfilm executives Kathleen Kennedy, Cary Beck, and Dave Filoni were enthusiastic about the concept, leading Soderbergh and Blunt to bring in Scott Z. Burns to write a script Driver called incredibly impressive. Unfortunately, the project was ultimately cancelled, as the actor recalls.
We pitched our script to Lucasfilm, and they were enthusiastic about the concept and our approach. However, when we presented it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, they rejected it. Their main concern was the idea that Ben Solo was still alive. That ended the project – it was called ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ and it was a great story, but it’s no longer being developed, so I’m now able to share details about it.
Adam Driver shared that the planned story, The Hunt for Ben Solo, would have brought his character, the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, back to life. While Star Wars has surprised fans before by revealing characters thought to be dead were actually alive – like Palpatine using a clone body – bringing Ben Solo fully back would have been a major event. The title suggests many different groups would have been searching for him, with varying intentions.
It wasn’t a shock that Adam Driver connected Steven Soderbergh with the project The Hunt for Ben Solo, considering they collaborated on the 2017 film Logan Lucky. I think it would have been great to see Soderbergh’s style brought to the Star Wars universe, but Disney executives Bob Iger and Alan Horn decided this type of story wasn’t the right fit. Here’s what Soderbergh had to say in a statement to the Associated Press:
I really enjoyed making the movie in my head. I’m just sorry the fans won’t get to see it.
More to come…
