Tom Cruise recently stopped by the set of NCIS: Origins, which is currently filming its second season for the 2025 TV lineup. It’s not known exactly why he visited the show, a prequel set in the 1990s, though he has a long-standing connection with Paramount, the company that owns CBS. His appearance was a big surprise for everyone working on Origins, including Mariel Molino, who told TopMob about her reaction.
Sadly, Molino, who plays the character Lala Dominguez, wasn’t able to meet Tom Cruise when he visited the set. She was taking a much-needed break at the time, as she explained to me in our interview today.
It’s so frustrating! I finished filming for the day, but I always go back to my trailer to rehearse my lines. I was really tired, so I took a 40-minute nap. While I was sleeping, Tom Cruise actually came to visit, but I completely missed him! No one woke me up to tell me he was there. Later, I went back to the set just as he was leaving, and everyone told me he’d been there. I couldn’t believe it! It was such a crazy thing to miss.

This fall, NCIS and its new prequel, NCIS: Origins, will be having a crossover event, and the idea behind it – spanning decades of history – sounds really promising!
The second season of NCIS: Origins will feature a younger version of Ducky, and I’m excited about how the show plans to pay tribute to the late David McCallum with this approach.
It’s really unfortunate that Mariel Molino missed her chance to meet Tom Cruise! She often takes quick naps, and usually it’s no problem, but this time it meant she wasn’t there when he arrived. Hopefully she’ll get another opportunity to meet him soon – maybe even work with him one day!
Even though the NCIS: Origins talent weren’t expecting Cruise to stop by, it turns out he indirectly influenced an aspect of the CBS show. David J. North shared on Instagram that he and fellow showrunner Gina Luctia Monreal took inspiration of the bar from Top Gun when they were designing Daly’s, the bar where the Origins characters go to relax. The prequel series is also set in the time period when Cruise was impressing in movies like Days of Thunder and A Few Good Men.
Don’t expect to see Tom Cruise make a cameo on NCIS: Origins – especially not a younger version of himself from the time of The Firm. But you can catch Lala, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, and the rest of the NIS team investigating crimes near Camp Pendleton every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. Episodes will also be available to stream on Paramount+ after they air.
