Keith Urban ‘Quietly Set Up His Own Place.’ An Insider Reports The Major Turning Point In His Split From Nicole Kidman

Celebrity splits are common, so it was still shocking when Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban announced their divorce last month. Looking back, there were hints – Keith Urban abruptly ended an interview with Ryan Seacrest, and the couple hadn’t been seen together much lately, plus some strange comments about being called ‘Babygirl.’ According to a source, those close to the couple weren’t actually surprised by the news, though.

Sources say Keith Urban initiated divorce proceedings some time ago. He was on tour for much of the summer of 2025, and then reportedly moved into a separate residence. According to an insider, this move was a key sign that the couple wouldn’t be able to reconcile, as they told People magazine:

They were growing apart, and when he moved into his own space, it seemed like their relationship was ending.

Someone else familiar with the situation said people expected the breakup, despite reports that Nicole Kidman was upset about it.

Those close to Keith and Nicole have known for some time that they’ve been living apart. Many of Keith’s friends believed a separation was likely to happen.

Interestingly, reports suggest Nicole Kidman was initially against the divorce and had been trying to save her marriage. Although she was the one who officially filed for divorce, sources claim this wasn’t her preferred outcome.

In an interview before her separation was announced, Nicole Kidman hinted at changes in her life. After the news became public, a clip resurfaced where she spoke to Vogue about turning 50 and realizing life often takes unexpected turns, suggesting she was already processing a shift in her personal life.

The separation appears to have gone smoothly. Contrary to some reports about a clause related to drug use, the legal documents suggest both parties agreed on how to divide their shared possessions – even things like frequent flyer miles – and would generally keep the assets they owned before the marriage. Each person is also responsible for their own debts, and Keith Urban paid for costs related to their children when he left the marriage.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have agreed on a custody arrangement for their two teenage daughters. Court documents show Kidman will have the girls for the majority of the year – 306 days – while Urban will have them for 59 days. The family will continue to live in Nashville, and given Urban’s busy touring schedule and the daughters’ ages, the arrangement isn’t unexpected.

But the split itself? Some fans will probably be reeling for years.
