Keanu Reeves Finally Has an Update on Constantine 2

Even though it gained a dedicated fanbase, very few people expected a sequel to it after the original film was released in 2005. However, those who enjoyed the original DC Comics character and Keanu Reeves’ performance have been excitedly awaiting Constantine 2 ever since its announcement, and Reeves has shared that the movie is progressing and getting closer to release.

During promotion for his latest film, with Aziz Ansari (who also wrote and directed it), Reeves was questioned by Jacqueline Coley from Fandango about the progress of Constantine 2. Known for his positive attitude, the John Wick actor shared this response:

We’re keeping our hopes up! A new version of the script just arrived. We’ll be presenting it to the studio and are hoping they respond positively as well.

As a huge movie fan, I’m thrilled to hear that Constantine 2 isn’t just being talked about – they actually have a script! And it’s from Akiva Goldsman, who even won an Academy Award! Apparently, the next draft is already in, and it’s just waiting for James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, to give it the green light. He’s already signed off on making it part of the DC Universe’s “Elseworlds” stories, which means we’ll be seeing Keanu Reeves back as John Constantine – the American, dark-haired version we all love! It’s great news for fans like me.

Following a long wait, a sequel was officially announced to be in development in 2022. The original actor will return to their role, and Francis Lawrence will once again direct. Shortly after the announcement, it was revealed that Akiva Goldsman would write the screenplay and produce, joining fellow producers J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella. Earlier in 2025, Lawrence stated the project was more ambitious than ever before.

Reeves starred in the first movie – which was inspired by the character Alan Moore created for his Swamp Thing comics in the late 1980s, before that character went on to lead DC Vertigo’s Hellblazer series – playing the title character, a uniquely talented exorcist. He discovers a troubling demonic plot while assisting Detective Angela Dodson (played by Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz) in solving her twin sister’s murder. The film also featured Djimon Hounsou, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, and Peter Stormare. Constantine earned over $230 million globally, but received a mixed reception and was often criticized by fans for not accurately reflecting the original source material. Despite this, many still consider it a strong dark fantasy feature.

Other Versions Of Constantine Have Graced The Screen

Almost ten years after Keanu Reeves’ movie came out, and before a follow-up film was even mentioned, the Constantine story continued as a TV series with the same name, created by David S. Goyer and Daniel Cerone. Although it only ran for one season on NBC, from 2014 to 2015, many viewers loved how Welsh actor Matt Ryan played the main character, feeling it was a more accurate representation of the original, Sting.

Actually, Ryan’s portrayal of John Constantine was well-received, leading him to play the character again in various projects. These included appearances in The CW’s Arrowverse, the DC Animated Movie Universe (beginning with Justice League Dark in 2017), and even the HBO Max series, Harley Quinn. However, he didn’t reprise the role for Netflix’s version of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, which featured Jenna Coleman as .

If a spin-off series focusing on Jenna Coleman’s demonologist character were actually made, and if Matt Ryan returned to play John Constantine again (maybe as the definitive version for the DCU), that would result in three different actors portraying Constantine on screen at the same time, alongside Keanu Reeves’ return. Some people felt that even having two different Batmans was a stretch. However, maybe the world(s) could benefit from all the assistance it can get when battling demonic forces. It’s a lot of Constantines, but perhaps necessary.
