As a gamer, I’ve always loved seeing unexpected team-ups, and it looks like the movies are finally catching on! We’ve gotten little hints of strange friendships before, but the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day film is promising to really dive into some wild pairings – Spider-Man teaming up with both Hulk and the Punisher? Seriously, that’s a combo I never saw coming, and I’m totally hyped to see how that plays out!
Marvel comics are full of interesting friendships – some famous, like Power Man and Iron Fist, and others that have faded away or aren’t celebrated enough. Unexpected bonds often form between heroes with nothing in common, or even villains who team up for a heist. Shared experiences, especially in the high-stakes world of superheroes and villains, can create surprising connections.
Cable and Deadpool’s Odd Couple Bromance Has Faded Out
They were an unlikely pair from the start. These two heroes, both known for their X-related abilities, had very different approaches and goals. But because they both relied on a special teleportation technology, they found themselves unexpectedly connected.
A mix-up with Cable’s sliding ability and Deadpool’s teleportation meant both heroes ended up in the same location whenever either of them used their powers. This caused a lot of funny chaos, but they eventually teamed up to fix the problem. While working together, they discovered they had more in common than they thought and that they really relied on each other during difficult times, forging a strong bond.
Deadpool and Cable have a strong bond, with Deadpool often going to great lengths – even traveling through different realities – to help Cable. Cable has always been there for Deadpool too. However, conflicts like Civil War and Secret Empire caused significant problems in their friendship, and it’s rarely discussed now.
Mary Jane and Black Cat Started as Enemies But Became Besties
Spider-Man’s love life was complicated, involving both Mary Jane Watson and Felicia Hardy, also known as Black Cat. His relationship with Mary Jane had its ups and downs, especially early on, as Peter Parker was still grieving the loss of Gwen Stacy. They faced several breakups before finally getting married.
While taking a break from crime-fighting, Black Cat and Spider-Man began a romantic relationship. However, they eventually split up, and Spider-Man later reconnected with and married Mary Jane Watson. Early on, Venom tried to sabotage their budding romance by creating conflict between Black Cat and Mary Jane.
Despite their different backgrounds, Mary Jane Watson and Black Cat bonded over their feelings for Peter Parker and the challenges of loving Spider-Man. They quickly became close friends and even teamed up in a comic book series together. While MJ’s own adventures as a superhero sometimes took center stage, their friendship has grown stronger, especially now that MJ is connected to Venom.
Hawkeye & Hank Pym Had Each Other’s Backs on the West Coast
Hank Pym was known as Giant-Man, but he wasn’t always easy to get along with. He often became so focused on his scientific work that he neglected his personal relationships. A serious mental health crisis also damaged those connections, tragically including a moment of violence against his wife, Janet van Dyne (the Wasp).
Returning to normal life after being a superhero was incredibly difficult for Pym, so much so that he retired from heroics altogether to focus on recovery. Even as just a scientist, though, he agreed to assist when Hawkeye formed a new West Coast Avengers team separate from the New York branch. While leading this new group proved challenging for Hawkeye, he found support and understanding in Hank Pym, who helped him navigate the stresses of being a leader.
Hawkeye also played a key role in helping Pym become more outgoing, and they developed a close friendship that supported them through difficult times. Eventually, Pym regained his position with the Avengers and returned to being a superhero. Though they’re still friends, their connection hasn’t been highlighted much since their time with the West Coast Avengers.
Squirrel Girl and Kraven the Hunter Formed a Unique Bond
Kraven the Hunter isn’t known for having close friends, even among other villains. Coming from a wealthy Russian family, Sergei Kravinoff always acted superior, making it difficult to form equal partnerships. His most frequent criminal associate, the Chameleon, is actually his abused younger half-brother, and that difficult family history hasn’t helped their relationship.
Everyone was shocked when Kraven, the famous hunter, started to like Squirrel Girl, a superhero known for always doing the right thing. Squirrel Girl, whose real name is Doreen Green, is a mutant who can talk to and control squirrels. Instead of immediately fighting Kraven when he began hunting squirrels – including her friend Tippy-Toe – she decided to try reasoning with him.
Over time, she managed to get through to Kraven, and he began to change for the better. He even started to let go of his fixation on Spider-Man and surprisingly assisted Squirrel Girl in a heroic effort. Sadly, Kraven usually fell back into his old villainous habits after the events of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, and their friendship didn’t last.
Shocker and Silvermane’s Head Had a Brief But Superior Run
Herman Schultz is famous as the villain Shocker, but he’s largely motivated by greed rather than genuine malice. While Spider-Man often fights him, even Spider-Man recognizes that Shocker isn’t truly evil – he just wants to pull off a big heist and usually doesn’t intend to harm anyone. In contrast, Silvermane was an older, ruthless crime boss obsessed with finding ways to live longer.
So, things went south for Silvermane pretty quickly. He thought upgrading to a full-body robot would make him unstoppable, but it backfired big time! Eventually, he lost everything – his real body was gone, and all that was left was his head being kept alive by the robot parts. Then, during one of my favorite playthroughs, Shocker totally snagged Silvermane’s head while we were fighting! It was a wild turn of events, honestly.
Though not exactly a friendly mentor, the ex-mob boss significantly influenced Shocker’s growth as a criminal. Their relationship was a surprisingly strong point for both characters, but it didn’t last past the end of the series. Shocker went back to smaller crimes until his recent death in a fight with Torment.
Jean Grey and Misty Knight Were Briefly Roommates in NYC
The X-Men are often portrayed as outsiders, but before they became widely popular in the ’90s, the original team was a small group based in Westchester, New York. They frequently interacted with other Marvel heroes within New York City, and even had favorite places to relax when mutant affairs got stressful.
So, Jean Grey needed a break from the X-Men and decided to crash with her new friend, Misty Knight. Misty’s part of this awesome duo called the Daughters of the Dragon, along with Colleen Wing, and they usually handle street-level cases. They worked with Power Man and Iron Fist a lot, basically becoming a team. It’s kinda funny, actually – Cyclops even dated Colleen for a bit when he thought Jean was gone for good! That didn’t last, obviously, once Jean came back, but it was a whole thing.

Both the X-Men and the Daughters of the Dragon have changed a lot over time, so it’s understandable that people may have forgotten about their connection.
Taskmaster and Black Ant Made a Hilarious But Ill-Fated Duo
Fans briefly followed the villainous partnership of Taskmaster and Black Ant. Taskmaster, originally a SHIELD agent named Tony Masters, had an incredible memory and decided to use his skills for hire, becoming a supervillain who trained other criminals.
I always thought Eric O’Grady’s story was wild! He was this SHIELD agent who basically stole the Ant-Man suit, and for a little while, he was a hero. But then he died, and things got really strange – a messed-up Life Model Decoy took his place and became Black Ant! What’s crazy is, because they shared a history with the suit, they actually worked really well together. They first teamed up in Bagalia, which is basically a haven for villains, and their whole dynamic was this dark, funny thing that people actually loved. They even ended up joining a team of evil Avengers, and honestly, their friendship was what kept them going when everything started falling apart.
Later, the duo started working for Kraven the Hunter, capturing heroes and villains with animal motifs for his Great Hunt. Black Ant didn’t realize he fit that description himself, and Taskmaster ended up betraying him. Taskmaster later regretted this and tried to rescue his friend, but their teamwork didn’t last, and they haven’t worked together much since.
Doctor Doom and Namor Spent Far More Time Together as Allies
Okay, so Doctor Doom is definitely a bad guy. I mean, yeah, there was that weird time he pretended to be Iron Man and he’s super close with his daughter Valeria, but mostly he’s always been a villain. Namor’s different though. People usually think of him as a hero, but honestly, he switches sides pretty often. He does what he thinks is best for the oceans, even if it means being the bad guy sometimes.
Namor frequently teams up with Doctor Doom due to their shared belief in safeguarding the environment, even if it means disregarding the well-being of people on land. This alliance actually began early in Marvel’s history and persists even when Namor is acting as a hero. A prime example occurred during the Dark Reign storyline: Doctor Doom joined Norman Osborn’s villainous Cabal largely because Namor had already agreed to be part of it.
Over the years, Namor’s increasingly radical actions have often strained his friendship with others, as both sides have focused on their own priorities. Despite this, they’ve shown they can still work together, most recently when Namor joined forces with the heroes against Doom during the events of One World Under Doom.
Hercules and Amadeus Cho’s Time Together Is Sorely Missed
Most people now recognize him as Brawn, the incredibly strong hero fueled by gamma energy. But before that, Amadeus Cho became known as one of the world’s most brilliant minds. He first connected with the Hulk after a terrible tragedy – the murder of his family. Later, when the Hulk returned to Earth seeking revenge, Amadeus even fought alongside him.
During the World War Hulk event, Amadeus Cho joined a group of heroes called the Renegades, hoping to talk to Hulk and keep people safe. The team also included Hercules, and their partnership quickly became very popular throughout the comic series. They formed a close friendship reminiscent of the classic Hulk and Rick Jones duo, but with their own distinct personalities. Cho was incredibly smart but often acted impulsively, while Hercules was experienced but tended to rush into things—a combination that fans loved. This ‘brains and brawn’ dynamic made them an instant hit.
Both characters faced temporary setbacks – Brawn weakened before shutting down, and Hercules briefly lost his abilities before joining the Guardians of the Galaxy and embarking on a new adventure.
The Incredibly Underrated Rick Jones and Pretty Much Everybody
When discussing overlooked friendships in Marvel comics, Rick Jones always deserves mention. His accidental actions were actually what turned Bruce Banner into the Incredible Hulk, beginning a lasting bond between them. Later, Rick played a key role in bringing together the original Avengers with his Teen Boy Brigade, and he even became Captain America’s new partner, taking on the mantle of Bucky.
Rick Jones had the unique ability to swap bodies with Captain Marvel, first with Mar-Vell and later with his son, Genis-Vell. Despite his strong ties to so many heroes, however, he’s become a relatively obscure figure in recent comics.
Despite appearing in many forms in Marvel comics, Rick Jones hasn’t been featured at all in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While understandable in certain situations, this omission feels significant considering his close ties to heroes like Hulk, Captain America, and Mar-Vell. Even when given more prominent roles – briefly as Captain Spider with a symbiote or as the powerful A-Bomb – the character hasn’t resonated. Sadly, Rick Jones has largely been forgotten instead of remaining a key friend to these iconic figures.
