A new thriller is debuting on Netflix this October. The streaming service recently shared a trailer for the limited series, created by Jesse McKeown (known for The Umbrella Academy) and Jessica Rhoades (known for Black Mirror).
The upcoming series launches on October 8th and features Kyle Hartnett, along with Charlie Heaton (known from Stranger Things) and Mackenzie Davis (Speak No Evil). This six-episode show is filmed in Newfoundland, Canada, and centers around a strange creature living under the sea.
What Is Below About?
The new series Below follows a fisherman named Calvin in a small town plagued by bizarre occurrences. The trailer reveals the town is under attack by a sea monster, and it’s up to Calvin to protect everyone while uncovering the truth. Adding to the mystery, Calvin’s son Wade starts behaving strangely. He partners with marine biologist Fonda to investigate the creature. Actress Davis describes the show as funny, scary, intelligent, and fast-paced.
The atmosphere of ‘Below’ feels like that of another show, set in a comparable small island town where unusual things start happening. Both programs share many similarities.
Both Widow’s Bay and Below share common themes: danger linked to water, and a leader fighting to protect their town. Interestingly, each show also features a parent desperately trying to save their son. Widow’s Bay has achieved significant success, receiving 19 Emmy nominations and attracting both large audiences and positive reviews – which suggests Netflix’s new series has good potential.
The Cast Immersed Themselves in Newfoundland Culture
The series Below was filmed on location in Newfoundland, which helped the actors connect with the local culture. Creator David McKeown described Newfoundland as a strikingly beautiful but also harsh and remote place. He explained to Tudum that despite the rugged landscape, the community is incredibly welcoming, the people are humorous, and the area has a unique charm.
Hartnett learned the regional accent by listening to a Newfoundland radio station where fishermen discussed their everyday experiences. At the same time, Heaton visited bars near St. John’s, the capital city, to understand the local culture and meet people.
Newfoundlanders are incredibly welcoming people who genuinely care about making sure guests feel comfortable and taken care of,” Heaton explained. “I’ll never forget when my driver offered to bring me dinner, saying he lived nearby and was happy to do so.
The production team avoided using green screens and instead filmed directly on the ocean to get authentic water footage. Actor David Heaton explained they were working with the Coast Guard, driving boats, and even kayaking in the open sea. While he’s experienced filming in real locations for Stranger Things before, this was his first time shooting on the ocean – something he found incredible.
Paul Mescal’s script immediately captivated Hartnett, who told Tudum he devoured the first two scripts in under an hour. He was struck by the unique voice of the writing, the compelling story idea, and a truly outstanding character—something he hadn’t encountered before.
Below comes out on Netflix on Oct. 8.
