Mike Flanagan is still one of the most active directors in Hollywood. Following the release of his film Carrie on Prime Video, he’s already landed another project with Amazon, meaning he’ll continue working with them for the foreseeable future.
Mike Flanagan Joins Warhammer 40,000 Cinematic Universe
Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree announced in a recent financial report that Amazon is partnering with United Artists (UA) and Mike Flanagan to create a Warhammer 40,000 series. According to the report, Flanagan has finished the initial story outlines and will soon begin writing the script.
Warhammer 40,000 is a science fantasy world with military themes, which represents a new direction for Mike Flanagan. He’s best known for creating scary movies and TV shows like The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass.
I’ve been really impressed with his work, especially how he brings Stephen King stories to life! He wrote and directed Gerald’s Game (2017) and Doctor Sleep (2019), which were fantastic, and I’m already excited for The Life of Chuck coming out in 2025. From what I understand, he’s currently working on a new take of Carrie for Prime Video with Summer H. Howell, and even bigger – he’s developing something based on The Dark Tower series! It feels like he really understands King’s vision.
Flanagan also wrote the first draft for DC Studios’ Clayface. He originally intended to direct the R-rated horror movie, but couldn’t because he was already committed to directing Universal’s The Exorcist: Martyrs.
Henry Cavill Remains an Important Part of Warhammer 40,000
Amazon MGM Studios has been developing a cinematic universe based on Warhammer 40,000 since 2022. Henry Cavill teamed up with Roy Lee and Natalie Viscuso from Vertigo Entertainment to acquire the rights to the franchise and then brought the project to Amazon.
Henry Cavill, who is a big fan of Warhammer 40,000, will not only star in the upcoming series but also help produce it and any future projects. With Mike Flanagan now writing the show, this adaptation – which has faced difficulties getting off the ground – is finally making significant progress.
Henry Cavill mentioned the project in June 2025, describing it as challenging and intricate. He told Esquire that this complexity is precisely what excites him about it.
The actor said it’s been wonderfully challenging to capture all the subtleties and complexities of the material in a way that does it justice.
