The ambitious scope of the new project has been unveiled – the director of Final Fantasy 14 says it will be larger than the complete Final Fantasy 7 Remake series. However, this exciting news comes with a catch, suggesting fans will likely have to wait a considerable amount of time before they can experience it, like exploring snowy landscapes in powerful Magitek Armor.
Square Enix has been working on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake for over ten years, and the project is still ongoing. Because of this, fans are hoping to see similar large-scale remakes for Final Fantasy 5 through 9. While these older games are already available on current systems with updated versions, they would really shine with modern graphics and fully voiced dialogue.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Director Thinks FF6 Remake Would Have To Be Bigger
Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7: Revelation, unexpectedly showed up at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin – the same event where Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7: Revelation was first announced. He participated in several events throughout the convention, including a discussion with Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida about the potential for remaking Final Fantasy 6.
Naoki Hamaguchi has said that his passion for Final Fantasy 6 is what inspired him to work in video games. Yoshinori Yoshida explained that remaking older Final Fantasy titles, like Final Fantasy 8 and 9, would be a massive undertaking, even larger than the entire Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. He believes that any such remakes would likely need to be released in four or five separate parts to do them justice, acknowledging that fans are eager to see these classic games updated.
Final Fantasy 6 Remake Isn’t On The Cards Yet
Yoshida and Hamaguchi addressed the possibility of a Final Fantasy 6 Remake, but clarified that it wasn’t currently being worked on. Hamaguchi jokingly explained that whenever he tells journalists it’s not in development, articles appear the next day claiming he is remaking it. He added that he now preemptively denies the project to avoid the misinterpretation.
It’s understandable that Square Enix is tackling remake projects one at a time. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake was first revealed back in 2015, and the complete story isn’t finished yet – the final game in the planned trilogy, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, isn’t due out until 2027. That’s not even considering any potential downloadable content for these games, or the possibility of reimagining other parts of the story, like Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, or the source novels, for modern platforms.
It would be amazing to see Final Fantasy 6 remade like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but Square Enix probably has other plans. Final Fantasy 8 feels like a more logical next step after Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Hopefully, creative director Naoki Hamaguchi will eventually get the chance to update the game that sparked his passion for the industry and introduce Terra’s story to a new generation of players.
