As a huge fan of Silo, season 2 really flipped my understanding of Bernard. He’s not just some mustache-twirling villain! It became clear he genuinely believed he was doing what was best for everyone. He was following the founders’ rules because he thought it was the only way to ensure the survival of those living in Silo 18 – he honestly thought keeping people from seeking the truth was protecting them.
In the final moments of Silo season 2, Lukas Kyle explained the Safeguard Procedure to him, revealing that he and everyone in the Silo could be eliminated very quickly. This discovery initially led him to decide to leave Silo 18 and give up his duties. But Juliette convinced him there was still a chance to save their community by preventing the Safeguard Procedure from being activated.
However, by season 3, Juliette has almost no memory of her life before, making it difficult for her to defend those she cares about from the Safeguard. It appears Bernard holds the key to understanding what happened to her.
Because Juliette met Bernard immediately upon entering Silo 18 and shared only the information about the Safeguard with him, he’s the one person who can help her remember what Solo taught her in Silo 17.
Bernard’s continued presence is key to Juliette regaining crucial memories, and it gives him a chance to make amends for his past actions. The ending of Silo season 3, episode 4, shows Tim Robbins’ character in poor health, hinting that his time may be limited. However, assisting Juliette in remembering vital pieces of her past could allow him to find redemption before it’s too late.
