Blade, known as a popular antihero – a half-human, half-vampire warrior – battles supernatural enemies with his signature swordsmanship and martial arts skills. Given how exciting this concept is for a movie, it’s surprising Marvel hasn’t been able to successfully launch a new ‘Blade’ film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Wesley Snipes famously played Blade in three movies released between 1998 and 2004. Surprisingly, he returned to the role in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, even though Marvel had already announced Mahershala Ali would be taking on the character for future MCU films back in 2019. While Ali has been cast as Blade, his only appearance so far has been a brief voice part in Eternals. He hasn’t officially debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet.
Kevin Feige Has All But Confirmed Blade Is Dead
When Mahershala Ali was cast as Blade in 2019, Marvel Studios started working on a movie centered around the character. However, the film has faced significant problems over the past seven years, including disagreements among the filmmakers, changes in who’s involved, and repeated delays. While Ali briefly voiced Blade in a scene after the credits of Eternals, he hasn’t actually appeared as the character on screen, and there are now concerns that he might not ever get to.
During a recent interview with Happy Sad Confused to discuss the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige addressed the stalled Blade reboot and Mahershala Ali’s involvement, suggesting it’s unlikely to move forward. This effectively confirms that plans for a solo Blade film have been cancelled, ending hopes of seeing the character debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The project faced seven years of difficulties, beginning soon after Ali was cast in July 2019.
Marvel started working on a new Blade movie for its cinematic universe in 2020, with plans to feature a mostly Black cast and crew. The script has gone through several writers: Stacy Osei-Kuffour initially signed on, but was later replaced by Beau DeMayo and Ben Sokolowski. Since then, Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto, and most recently Michael Green have all worked on the screenplay.
When Eric Pearson signed on as writer in June 2024, fans were optimistic about the future of Blade. He’d previously worked on successful Marvel films like Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. However, the movie has faced a lot of behind-the-scenes issues – not just with writers, but also directors. Bassam Tariq (known for Mogul Mowgli) was originally set to direct, but Yann Demange (Lovecraft Country) took over in November 2022. Then, in June 2024, Demange left the project as well, creating further instability for Blade.
Honestly, it felt like Marvel Studios couldn’t quite nail down what they wanted this Blade movie to be. For a while, it was bouncing around between different ideas – a period piece here, a team-up with Black Knight there, even debating whether to go for an R-rating or not! But recent word from Kevin Feige suggests the long and rocky development might finally be wrapping up… though thankfully, all hope isn’t lost just yet. It sounds like they almost gave up, but maybe, just maybe, we’ll still get a Blade movie eventually.
Blade Could Still Have a Future In the MCU
Although plans for a standalone Blade movie seem to be on hold, and Marvel’s Kevin Feige hinted that Mahershala Ali might not be playing Blade in the MCU after all, the character still has a chance to appear. He could debut in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. These films are expected to merge all of Marvel’s different universes into a single timeline, which could open the door for a new, younger actor to take on the role of Blade.
Moreno’s claim in Deadpool & Wolverine that there’s only been one Blade has been disproven. Mahershala Ali voiced Blade in Eternals, and a different version appeared as Moon Knight in the animated Marvel Zombies, even using Ali’s likeness and being voiced by Todd Williams. This version was well-received, demonstrating Marvel’s potential for bringing Blade into the main cinematic universe, and fans are hoping the project still happens.
While Wesley Snipes is iconic as Blade, many fans are excited about the possibility of Mahershala Ali taking on the role, potentially in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. These movies are expected to wrap up the Multiverse Saga and feature a huge cast of Marvel characters, including Blade. It would be amazing to see Ali’s Blade lead a team of supernatural heroes against Doctor Doom in Secret Wars, and rumors suggest he might be joining a specific group to do just that.
Blade Has Been Rumored For the MCU’s Midnight Sons Team
There’s been talk that Marvel Studios might not make a standalone Blade movie right away. Instead, they could first introduce the character—played by Mahershala Ali—as part of a team. This team is rumored to be the Midnight Sons, a group known for fighting supernatural villains in Marvel comics, and Blade could potentially lead them. While this idea is gaining traction, Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet.
As a huge MCU fan, I’m really hoping they bring the Midnight Sons to life! Imagine Blade leading a team with characters like Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, and even Werewolf by Night – it would be epic! They could also add Ghost Rider, Morbius, and some of the Darkhold characters. It would be amazing to see Blade at the center of all that, and really establish him as a key player in the MCU’s future.
Fans have long speculated about the Midnight Sons – a supernatural team from Marvel Comics originally assembled in 1992 to battle Lilith, Mother of All Demons – appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Recent reports from January 2026 suggest that Blade will be part of this team. While a standalone Blade movie seems unlikely after decisions by Kevin Feige, there’s still hope for a team-up film that could revitalize the character and introduce a new version to modern audiences.
