For almost ten years, a reboot has been stalled in development at Blumhouse Productions. But with recent low-budget horror movies proving popular, things might finally be moving forward on this long-delayed project.
Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, recently discussed the progress of the King Spawn movie with Popverse. The film was initially announced in 2017, with Jamie Foxx set to star, but development has been slow. McFarlane explained this is because he’s been very involved, and has turned down multiple script drafts that didn’t match his vision for a new Spawn movie.
A Perfect Script Has Not Yet Been Submitted
Look, as a huge fan of this project, I have a very specific vision for how it should feel – dark, gritty, even unsettling. It needs to be creepy and genuinely scary at times! Honestly, some of the script drafts haven’t quite hit that mark. But these are talented writers, and you gotta give them room to work. My job is to keep steering things back on course. I’ve been rejecting a lot of scripts because they just weren’t capturing what I envision; some were too extreme one way or another. It’s frustrating, but ultimately it comes down to my personal taste – I’m basically searching for that ‘just right’ feel, you know? Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
McFarlane believes films like Five Nights at Freddy’s and Backrooms demonstrate a path to success for King Spawn. These movies proved highly profitable despite minimal special effects spending. He wants King Spawn to be similarly dark and realistic, but without expensive sets or action sequences. McFarlane feels that trying to compete with the large budgets of Marvel and DC—which aren’t performing as well at the box office lately—wouldn’t be a smart strategy.
King Spawn Can Take Some Notes From Obsession
He explained that films like Obsession, Backrooms, and the recent Leviticus capture a similar feeling to what he’s been saying about Spawn for a decade. He believes they prove you don’t need huge special effects or massive action sequences to make a character feel powerful and impactful; you can achieve that without relying on typical superhero tropes like battles in crowded city centers.
He questioned why they would aim for a cheaper imitation when they could fully embrace what makes Spawn unique – something neither Captain America nor Superman can offer. He emphasized this meant exploring truly gritty and mature themes, pushing the boundaries of darkness in ways those other heroes don’t.
McFarlane believes producers are open to a darker, creepier tone for the upcoming King Spawn movie, likely influenced by the success of recent independent horror films. While this doesn’t mean the script is finished, it’s the most positive news we’ve heard about the project in a while. It’s still uncertain whether or when the film will actually be made.
