It’s one of those shows that just keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.
Prime Video’s The Peripheral Is a Compelling Time-Travel Sci-Fi Series
The story centers on Flynne Fisher (Chloë Grace Moretz), a skilled VR gamer who takes a job testing what she thinks is a new virtual reality headset. She needs the money to help pay for her mother’s medical bills. She excels at the tasks she’s given, but the job quickly becomes much more dangerous than she anticipated when the company contacts her with a warning: her life is now at risk.
Flynne quickly realizes the headset isn’t creating a virtual reality experience. Instead, it lets her remotely control a robot – called a Peripheral – in the future. This means anything she does affects the real world, seventy years ahead of her own time.
What’s really fascinating about this time travel method is how it sidesteps a lot of the usual paradox problems. For Flynne, it’s actually safer than physical time travel because she’s not sending her whole self into the future – just her mind. She’s remotely controlling a body, which means it’s her consciousness doing the traveling, and that clever setup avoids a bunch of potential timeline messes. As a film buff, I appreciate how neatly they’ve addressed the ‘what if you meet your past self?’ questions!
I’m really captivated by what happens after Flynne starts taking on these jobs and changing things in the future, but the fallout isn’t the typical time travel paradox you’d expect. Honestly, the way everything is set up – I don’t want to give anything away – creates such a tense, thrilling atmosphere. It genuinely feels like nowhere and no when is secure, and I’m completely hooked!
The Peripheral Was Canceled Too Soon
I was really into this show, and the idea behind it was so fresh! The first season was a total rollercoaster, always keeping me on the edge of my seat. It’s just a shame it didn’t get renewed, especially since it ended with a huge cliffhanger. Sadly, it looks like we’ll never find out what happens next.
