Tom Holland is actively building excitement around the idea that his Spider-Man character might transform into the Symbiote Spider-Man.
Venom first appeared in the Spider-Man story in 1984 during the Secret Wars comic series. Spider-Man initially believed it was just a costume, but it turned out to be a living creature that tried to control him. He managed to escape, but the creature then bonded with Eddie Brock, creating Venom. While the movie Spider-Man 3 (2007) showed Spider-Man wearing the symbiote, Tom Holland believes the Marvel Cinematic Universe will eventually show this part of the story as well.
During an interview with Cinepolis as part of promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tom Holland was asked by a young fan – in Spanish – if the symbiote would be featured in the next Marvel film. Holland responded with a hopeful but noncommittal answer.
That’s a great question! I don’t have an answer right now, but I’m confident we’ll see the symbiote eventually.
The stage is set for the Venom symbiote to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The mid-credits scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home showed that Eddie Brock (played by Tom Hardy) from the Venom movies was brought to the main MCU universe (Earth-616) due to Doctor Strange’s spell mistake. Although Eddie was sent back to his own universe, he accidentally left some of the Venom symbiote behind, meaning Peter Parker could encounter it in the future.
Currently, it doesn’t look like Venom (the symbiote) will appear in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day film, which already features several villains. The movie will see Michael Mando reprise his role as Mac Gargan/Scorpion from Spider-Man: Homecoming, and introduces Marvin Jones III as Tombstone. Boomerang, Tarantula, and The Hand are also set to appear. Plus, Sadie Sink’s mysterious character will create challenges for Peter Parker while he experiences an unusual physical change.
After the storyline of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it’s uncertain when Tom Holland will reprise his role as Spider-Man. He isn’t currently scheduled to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and there’s no indication he’ll be in Avengers: Secret Wars either. Despite this, Holland wants to continue playing Peter Parker, which means the possibility of seeing him as Symbiote Spider-Man hasn’t been ruled out.
Elsewhere in the Marvel multiverse, the first season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man ended with Norman Osborn obtaining a fragment of the symbiote. Because this Disney+ animated show features a different version of Peter Parker – one mentored by Osborn instead of Tony Stark – it offers a unique path to introducing the Symbiote Spider-Man within the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. Season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is set to arrive later this year.
