Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Star Breaks Silence On Original Character After Casting Backlash

Actor Elliot Page, known for his role in The Umbrella Academy, recently addressed feedback regarding Christopher Nolan’s movie after receiving some negative comments online.

After being cast as Sinon in the new movie based on Homer’s epic poem, the actor faced criticism from people expressing transphobic views online and within conservative groups. Elon Musk also criticized director Christopher Nolan for casting actors like Elliot Page and Lupita Nyong’o, stating he plans to use artificial intelligence to create a more historically accurate version of The Odyssey.

Christopher Nolan’s film has proven successful both financially and critically. Now, Elliot Page has spoken about his time working on it, deliberately avoiding engagement with harmful anti-transgender commentary.

In an interview with Desi Lydic on The Daily Show, the actor admitted that Sinon isn’t a character from The Odyssey—he’s actually from Virgil’s Aeneid. Because of this, he wanted to make a strong impression in his limited screen time and “capture the essence of the character, and hopefully please Chris [the director].”

Page last appeared in a Christopher Nolan film in 2010’s Inception. When they began working together again on The Odyssey, they talked about how her character, Sinon, represents “the inner struggle Odysseus faces and the harsh realities of war – its brutality and violence.”

Although the character has limited screen time, his appearance is very memorable. Page felt a lot of pressure to deliver a good performance, but described it as a positive kind of nervousness.

The character I portray isn’t actually from the original story of The Odyssey. My main goal was to make a strong impression in the limited scenes I have and, ultimately, to meet the director’s vision.

Working with someone like Chris is fantastic – he has incredible vision and really delivers on it. When we first discussed the character, and how Sinon would represent confronting the trauma of war and its violence, it was a really insightful conversation.

I was really nervous and wanted to do a good job with the film, but it was actually exciting nervousness – the kind that helps you perform.

Filming The Odyssey was physically challenging for the actors. However, Page felt he had it easier than most because he filmed his scenes early and then returned later in the production. After witnessing the grueling conditions his co-stars endured, Page was amazed they were still able to continue.

Page found the weather and cold temperatures the most difficult aspects of filming. Fortunately, his experience growing up and working in Canada helped him cope, as he was already accustomed to harsh conditions.

I was involved at both the beginning and end of filming. Honestly, I was amazed everyone still had energy! My job wasn’t nearly as difficult as others’. The biggest challenges were probably just dealing with the weather and temperature, but growing up working in Canada prepared me for tough conditions.

Page joins a remarkable cast in The Odyssey, alongside stars like Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, John Leguizamo, Samantha Morton, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and Himesh Patel.

The new movie, The Odyssey, opened in theaters this weekend and became the number one film, earning $124.5 million in the US and $264.1 million globally. So far, the movie has made a total of $303.95 million worldwide.

Since there aren’t any big new movies coming out on July 24th, Odyssey is predicted to continue performing well in its second week, potentially earning around $70 million at the box office.

Nolan shot the entire film The Odyssey using IMAX 70mm cameras. This has been a major attraction for audiences, and IMAX showings are quickly selling out nationwide, especially in cities like Los Angeles and New York.

Even though some people made hateful comments about the cast – specifically targeting actors like Page and Nyong’o with transphobic and racist remarks – the movie The Odyssey has been a huge success and is expected to be one of the year’s biggest blockbusters.
