Get ready to revisit the world of Blade Runner! Prime Video has released a first look at its new series, revealing Hunter Schafer as Cora and Michelle Yeoh as Olwen.
This film is a sequel to Blade Runner 2049, set fifty years in the future. Unlike previous Blade Runner movies, this story depicts a world where replicants have successfully rebelled and are now in control.
Blade Runner 2099 Jumps Forward 50 Years
Set in Los Angeles in 2099, Blade Runner 2099 follows Cora, a woman who has spent her life hiding by constantly changing her identity. Determined to provide a secure future for her brother, she takes on one last role and is unexpectedly paired with Olwen, a Blade Runner replicant facing her own mortality. Together, they uncover a growing conspiracy that threatens the very existence of a city trying to rebuild itself.
According to showrunner Silka Luisa, Michelle Yeoh’s character, Olwen, is tracking a team of runaway replicants who have gone missing. Knowing she doesn’t have much time left – replicants can pinpoint their exact date of death – Olwen is determined to complete her mission in the final days of her life.
Luisa explains that the new storyline closely follows the narrative arc of Roy Batty from the original movie, but this time, it’s told through the eyes of a replicant.
Blade Runner 2099 Returns to the Source Material
Although Ridley Scott’s classic Blade Runner heavily influenced the visual style of Blade Runner 2099, the creators wanted to build a richer world. To do this, they revisited Phillip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which originally inspired the very first Blade Runner film.
Luisa explains that they frequently revisited the source material when developing the show’s setting. Because a TV series allows for much more detailed exploration than a book, they were able to expand on the world, introduce new locations, and delve into previously unexplored aspects of the story’s history and universe – things fans had expressed interest in seeing. The book proved to be a valuable guide throughout this process.
This new series flips the script on the typical story of robots and their makers. After robots rebelled, they now control the city, leaving humans as second-class citizens. According to Luisa, the show explores what happens after humanity’s dominance ends and questions what it truly means to be human when being human isn’t so special anymore.
The new series, Blade Runner 2099, is planned to premiere on Prime Video in 2026. You can currently watch the original Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 on the streaming service.
