Be warned – spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4, Episode 1, “Valles Marineris!” The latest installment of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has finally given a beloved character the advancement they’ve been waiting six decades to receive. Penned by Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, and directed by Chris Fisher, the season 4 premiere takes the USS Enterprise back 65 million years into the past. There, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) makes a pivotal choice that alters the course of human history.
Since Star Trek: Strange New Worlds started, there haven’t been many promotions among Captain Pike’s crew. Most of the characters have stayed at the same rank since the beginning of the series. The only exceptions are Nyota Uhura, who went from a Starfleet Academy cadet to an Ensign, and James T. Kirk, who became a Lieutenant Commander and First Officer on the USS Farragut.
Captain Pike and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) first appeared in the original Star Trek pilot, “The Cage,” and their positions have remained consistent for six decades. But in season four of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, they finally begin to advance in rank. While Pike was initially offered a promotion but turned it down, he ensured Number One received the recognition she deserved.
Number One Was Finally Promoted To Commander In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
The season four premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finally sees Una Chin-Riley receive the promotion to full Commander. It’s surprising to learn that Number One had only held the rank of Lieutenant Commander since the original pilot, “The Cage,” despite being widely recognized as the best First Officer in Starfleet and serving as second-in-command of the Federation’s flagship, the USS Enterprise.
Captain Pike told Una that her promotion to Commander is a step toward eventually commanding her own starship. The show Star Trek: Strange New Worlds suggests Number One will become a Captain before the prequel series finishes with its fifth season. However, neither Pike nor Una realizes yet that she won’t be captaining the USS Enterprise – that ship is destined for James T. Kirk.
In the original “Star Trek” episode “The Cage,” Number One (Una) held the rank of Lieutenant Commander and served as First Officer in 2254. With “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” season 4 set in the early 2260s, Una has essentially been frozen at that rank for almost ten years. If she is promoted to Captain by Chin-Riley, it would happen much more quickly – within just a few years.
The delay in Una Chin-Riley’s promotion stemmed from her imprisonment and court-martial after revealing she was a genetically engineered Illyrian. Although she successfully defended her rights in court and was allowed to return to Starfleet and the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, Starfleet was initially cautious. Ultimately, Admiral Robert April (played by Adrian Holmes) approved Captain Pike’s request to promote her.
Captain Pike Refused Promotion, But A Different One Will Still Happen
In the premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, Admiral April offered Captain Pike a promotion. However, Pike turned down the opportunity to become a Commodore. He prefers to remain captain of the Enterprise and continue exploring new worlds for as long as possible, knowing that a tragic accident resulting in severe injuries will happen within a few years.
Because Pike knows what his difficult future holds, he likely also realizes he’ll eventually receive a promotion. In the original Star Trek episode “The Menagerie,” Pike (Sean Kenney) is already a Fleet Captain. Before that, in season two of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (“Lost in Translation”), Chris had temporarily achieved the rank of Fleet Captain while commanding the USS Enterprise, the USS Farragut, and overseeing a deuterium refinery.
In Star Trek, Fleet Captain is usually a temporary position given when leading a large, multi-ship operation. A Commodore, on the other hand, is a permanent rank similar to a rear admiral. Commodores generally command a small group of ships or oversee a starbase. Because neither rank permanently commands a starship on a long-term exploration mission, Christopher Pike, who would later become a Fleet Captain, chose to decline a promotion to Commodore.
As a huge Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fan, I’ve been waiting for Una Chin-Riley to get promoted, and it feels like a really important step towards how the show will eventually wrap things up. It’s interesting because now she technically outranks Kirk, which is a bit of a shift! Unless, of course, they give the First Officer on the USS Farragut a promotion too – that would make sense considering he’s destined to become Captain of the Enterprise.
After four seasons and a 60-year gap, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has finally given a character the long-awaited promotion that took the longest in the history of Star Trek.
