Amazon Prime Video is bringing back a popular science fiction series that blends elements of both Reacher and Terminator. In recent years, Prime Video has been actively acquiring rights to major franchises, including The Lord of the Rings, Warhammer 40,000, and the James Bond films.
This newer streaming service has quickly become one of the wealthiest, largely because it’s owned by Amazon. With Amazon’s resources, they can buy almost anything. This means more big-budget entertainment – think impressive TV shows, movies, and revivals of old favorites – which is good news for viewers, but concerning for those worried about fewer independent companies.
Prime Video revealed plans in July 2026 to revive the Robocop franchise with a new eight-episode series. The show will be produced by Blumhouse Atomic Monster, with Peter Ocko leading the project as showrunner and James Wan, founder of Atomic Monster, acting as an executive producer.
The new show, robocop (note the lowercase ‘c’), will explore a different story within the world of RoboCop, while still capturing the spirit and themes of the original movies. For those unfamiliar, the RoboCop franchise started in 1987 with Paul Verhoeven’s groundbreaking and often violent science fiction action film.
In a dark and troubled Detroit of the near future, police officer Alex Murphy (played by Peter Weller) is violently killed by a gang. However, instead of leaving it at that, his body is used in a groundbreaking experiment called RoboCop. This transforms him into a powerful, armored cyborg dedicated to fighting crime, but at the cost of his personal memories.
While it looks like a typical action movie, RoboCop is actually a smart satire that mixes different genres. It offers insightful commentary on issues like private companies taking over public services, the dangers of unchecked corporate power, and what it means to be human, all while still delivering a thrilling experience. Unfortunately, the sequels haven’t lived up to the quality of the original, and fans are hoping Amazon’s new RoboCop series will break that trend.
Prime Video’s Robocop Can Save The Struggling Live-Action Franchise
Following the success of RoboCop, three sequels were released: RoboCop 2 (1990), RoboCop 3 (1993), and a remake in 2014. However, these films generally received poor reviews and weren’t as well-made as the original. The franchise also spawned several television series, starting with a short-lived show in 1988.
Look, let’s be honest – while it’s great to see RoboCop keep popping up, those follow-up TV series just haven’t captured the magic of the original movie. There was a second attempt in ’94 with more episodes than the first show (21 compared to 12), but still only one season. Then came RoboCop: Alpha Commando in ’98, and RoboCop: Prime Directives in 2001. Sadly, none of them even come close to the impact of that initial film.
The RoboCop franchise is iconic, but surprisingly lacking in truly great installments. Most of what people remember and love about the series – the famous quotes, compelling characters – comes from the original RoboCop movie, and perhaps a few worthwhile moments if you really look for them in the sequel.
The new Robocop series on Amazon Prime has a lot to prove, as it needs to reshape how people view the whole franchise. But if it’s just decent, it could surprisingly become one of the best Robocop stories in almost 40 years.
