Steven Soderbergh’s critically praised new crime film, which was a hit in theaters earlier this year, will be available to stream on Hulu next month.
I was so excited when The Christophers finally came out in theaters on April 10th! It opened alongside films like You, Me & Tuscany and Beast, but I knew I had to see this one. It’s a really clever, darkly funny crime story with amazing performances from Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel. It came just a year after Soderbergh’s Black Bag, and just like that one, I thought The Christophers was fantastic. If you didn’t get a chance to see it in cinemas, don’t worry – it’ll be available to stream in just a few weeks, and I highly recommend checking it out!
Hulu is adding several new titles on Saturday, August 22nd, including the movie The Christophers. Joining it will be the films All of Us Strangers (2023) and Elevation (2024), plus seasons 3 & 4 of My 600-lb Life: Where Are They Now?, seasons 6 & 7 of MythBusters, and the first season of 9/11: Reunited. This announcement comes just two days after the premiere of Lion, a new docuseries produced by Jon Favreau, which will also be available on Disney+ and the National Geographic Channel.
McKellen plays Julian Sklar, an aging and quirky artist, in The Christophers. The film’s name comes from two collections of paintings Julian created in the 1990s inspired by a former love. He started a third collection, but never completed it. Years later, Julian’s children employ Coel as Lori Butler, an artist who has stopped showing her work publicly, to act as his assistant. Their real plan is for her to finish the unfinished paintings so they can be sold for profit after Julian passes away.
Okay, so I’m really excited about this new Steven Soderbergh film, The Christophers. The cast is fantastic – Sir Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel are leading the charge, and they’re joined by James Corden, Jessica Gunning, Tilly Botsford, Daniel Fearn, Lucy McCormick, Dallas Campbell, and Ferdy Roberts. The script is by Ed Solomon, who you might know from Bill & Ted – he actually worked with Soderbergh before on No Sudden Move, which I thought was brilliant. It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on September 7th, 2025, and will be getting a wide release by Neon on April 10th. I’ve already marked my calendar!
As we’ve seen, The Christophers has been popular with audiences. ScreenRant gave it a rating of 7 out of 10, praising how the film relies on its two main actors to lead viewers to a satisfying ending. The review also highlighted that this movie is quite different from Soderbergh’s previous films, Black Bag and Presence, proving he continues to be a compelling director.
The film The Christophers has been a critical and popular success in 2026, earning a 92% approval rating from critics and an 87% rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. Director Steven Soderbergh is also working on a documentary, announced in April 2025, about the last interview John Lennon and Yoko Ono gave together before Lennon’s death in 1980.
