This August, DC Studios will begin releasing its R-rated, animated Batman: Knightfall trilogy. The first part, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, will be available digitally, with a physical copy coming out in September. DC recently shared a new trailer for the long-awaited series.
The new, mature-themed Batman film had its first public showing at the Annecy International Film Festival. This week, it will also be shown at San Diego Comic-Con before being released to the public in August.
Batman: Knightfall Part 1 Sets Release Date
Based on the famous “Knightfall” story from the 1990s Batman comics, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall begins with the destruction of Arkham Asylum and the escape of all its dangerous inmates into Gotham City. While trying to recapture his most notorious foes, Batman is tested like never before, leading to a climactic battle against a powerful new villain: Bane!
The first part of Batman: Knightfall, titled Knightfall, features Michael Mando as the villain Bane and Pablo Schreiber as Azrael. The episode was directed by Jeff Wamester from a script by Jeremy Adams, with Jim Krieg, Kimberly S. Moreau, Sam Register, and Michael Uslan serving as producers.
Batman: Knightfall Will Adapt a ’90s Batman Epic
“Knightfall” was a large-scale Batman storyline that unfolded across all the Batman comic books from 1993 to 1994. DC Comics broke the story into three parts—Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd—creating an event for Batman similar to what Marvel was doing with its own big stories around the same period.
Okay, so when I first read this storyline, I was genuinely surprised to see someone else step into the Batman role – Azrael taking up the mantle, even temporarily, was a bold move. It wasn’t a small event either; it really brought the whole Bat-family together – Catwoman, Robin, you name it, they were all involved. And the ripples even reached the Justice League, though their part felt a little more like a cameo.
The story of “Knightfall” shares similarities with Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films, particularly the character of Bane, who is portrayed by Tom Hardy.
The Future of DC Animation Under DC Studios
In 2023, DC Studios began overseeing the production of these films and decided to move away from a single, connected storyline. Instead, they incorporated elements from various previous movies into the three-part Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths series.
Since then, the studio has released several self-contained animated films, such as the two-part Watchmen adaptation and Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires. The fact that Batman: Knightfall was a three-part story indicates DC Studios plans to keep producing ambitious animated movies.
DC Studios is also developing a project centered around Bane. This is happening as the studio is being given more focus after the recent underwhelming box office results of Supergirl. This would be the second DC Studios film to spotlight a Batman villain, following Clayface, which is scheduled for release in October. Information about The Brave and the Bold, the first movie to introduce the new DC Universe version of Batman, is still limited.
You can get Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall digitally starting August 25th. The 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD versions will be available on September 8th.
