27 Years Later, Beast Wars Brings Back a Forgotten Power-Up in New Transformers Release

Dedicated followers of Beast Wars are aware the series expanded internationally, including a unique Japanese anime version. Now, one of the powerful Maximals is getting a new collectible figure inspired by a lesser-known design.

The Takara Tomy New Legends NL-01 Lio Convoy Legendary Green Lion Ver. is a recolored version of an existing toy. Instead of his traditional colors, this figure features a unique green color scheme inspired by a lesser-known upgrade from the character’s history. We now have a detailed look at both the action figure itself and its packaging, which has a retro design.

Lio Convoy’s Glow-in-the-Dark Figure Features New Art by Beast Wars II’s Character Designer

The new Takara Tomy New Legends NL-01 Lio Convoy Legendary Green Lion Ver. is a recolored version of the previously released Lio Convoy toy from the 40th Selection series. That Lio Convoy figure was originally created by modifying the Transformers: Legacy: Evolution toy to represent this character. This means Lio Convoy transforms from a robot into a realistic lion, with details in its animal form closely resembling the animation style of Beast Wars II: Super-Lifeform Transformers.

Originally released in Japan as Beast Wars Second, this anime series ran at the same time as the Western Beast Wars: Transformers cartoon. The accompanying action figure includes the same weapons and details as earlier versions, like two blasters and “lion claws” when in robot form. It can also perform the Lion Typhoon spinning attack using its beast mode head after transforming.

This version of Lio Convoy features a new color scheme: glow-in-the-dark white and aquamarine plastic, instead of the usual white and red. This design is based on his short-lived powered-up appearance from the anime series, which he achieved after being exposed to Angolmois energy. The official Transformers Japan X account recently shared images of the figure’s packaging, displaying both the Beast Wars II logo and a cel-shaded illustration of Lio Convoy in robot form.

The first release in the new Legends Series, ‘Lio Convoy: Legendary Green Lion Version,’ will be available for purchase this weekend! This figure is made with a special glow-in-the-dark material that makes it look like it’s glowing just like in the original anime when viewed in the dark. The packaging features brand-new artwork by Hiroyuki Taiga, who designed the characters for Beast Wars II.

The figure will be released in Japan on July 25th, but it probably won’t be officially sold in stores in Western countries. However, it should become available through other online retailers. Lio Convoy isn’t very well-known in the West, and past toy releases have sometimes used his original Japanese name, or a Westernized version, Leo Prime.

I’m so excited to see Beast Wars making a huge comeback! It’s incredible – they’re releasing all sorts of new toys inspired by the original Japanese anime. And get this: they’re even doing an action figure of Lio Convoy’s main Predacon enemy, who can transform into multiple forms!
