The Prime Video Western series, executive produced by Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman, first launched in February. It tells the story of four women who trained members of the Underground Railroad as spies during the Civil War. After a dramatic finale to its first season, The Gray House, there’s currently no word on whether the show will be renewed for a second season.
Keith David, star of The Gray House and playing Henry H. Garnet, recently told ScreenRant he’s optimistic about a second season of the show, President Curtis. While he doesn’t have any confirmed information about a potential return, he believes there are plenty of unexplored historical events that could fuel new stories. As he put it:
It would be amazing to truly understand the hidden parts of American history – all the stories and information we haven’t had access to. There’s so much potential there, and I’d be fascinated to see where exploring those untold stories could lead us.
As a big Prime Video watcher, I’m really hoping The Gray House gets renewed! Amazon doesn’t share how many people are actually watching, but that’s what will decide its fate. Still, it’s a good sign that the show was consistently in their top 10 list for several weeks – that suggests a lot of us were tuning in!
Reception to the new Western series has been mixed. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a low score of only 42%, often pointing out historical inaccuracies and weak character development for the female leads. While viewers seem to like it more – giving it a 68% rating on Popcornmeter – that’s still not a very enthusiastic response.
Featuring actors such as Mary-Louise Parker, Daisy Head, and Christopher McDonald, The Gray House is an eight-episode series. However, it may not get a second season because it was originally designed as a limited series – the story, which centers on historical characters like Eliza Van Lew, Elizabeth Van Lew, and Mary Jane Richards, feels complete after these episodes.
