Okay, as a huge Star Wars fan, one of the things I’m loving about this new era is how they’re bringing back stuff from the past and making it feel fresh again. It’s cool that Disney isn’t just creating new characters, but also revisiting older ideas. And The Mandalorian & Grogu are especially good at this – they recently included an Easter egg that actually dates all the way back to something from 44 years ago! It was a really neat surprise for longtime fans like me.
The series The Mandalorian & Grogu is full of enjoyable nods and links to the broader Star Wars universe. One of the most interesting hidden details appears right at the beginning, during an action scene where Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and Grogu are tracking down an Imperial leader named Commander Barro.
As a huge Star Wars fan, one of the things I’ve always loved about the Disney era is how Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni consistently sneak in things we’ve only dreamed of seeing – characters, ships, even designs straight from those classic Kenner toys! It’s a really fun tradition, and The Mandalorian & Grogu has some fantastic examples. One of the very first, and honestly one of the best, Easter eggs they hid is a perfect illustration of this.
The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Opening Battle Features A Kenner INT-4 Interceptor
The first scene of The Mandalorian & Grogu features Din Djarin and Grogu fighting against a large Imperial base commanded by Commander Barro. The battle takes place on a freezing planet that strongly resembles Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back, and includes snowtroopers and three massive AT-AT walkers.
Din and Grogu managed to destroy two of the walkers, but Barro prepared the third to explode as a final attempt to escape in his INT-4 Interceptor. Before he could get away, Din Djarin used the remaining walker’s lasers to shoot Barro down, just as the AT-AT detonated.
Though the INT-4 appeared to be a completely new Imperial vehicle, dedicated Star Wars fans probably knew exactly what it was. Looking like an AT-ST cockpit with wings attached, the INT-4, nicknamed the “Mini-Rig,” is a relatively obscure Imperial design that hadn’t appeared on screen until now in this latest Star Wars film.
The INT-4 Interceptor is a classic toy that Kenner first released in 1982 as part of their expanding Star Wars collection. Though it was created during the original Star Wars trilogy, it never actually appeared in any of the films.
Although the scout ship appeared in a Disney mobile game back in 2014, The Mandalorian & Grogu is the first time the INT-4 has been shown on screen. This also carries on a fantastic tradition that’s become common in recent Star Wars stories.
Star Wars Has A Fun History Of Making Kenner Toys Canon In The Disney Era
As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I’ve really enjoyed seeing the franchise revisit those classic Kenner toys from when I was a kid! It’s become a fun tradition with Disney – taking those old designs and actually making them part of the official story. Some of these toys were based on early sketches Lucasfilm never used, but a lot of them were completely original creations. Now, with shows like Rebels, The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and everything else, creators like Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are finally bringing those toys to life on screen – sometimes for the very first time, which is just awesome!
As a longtime Star Wars fan and critic, I’ve always been fascinated by how toys have actually influenced the canon. Think about Boba Fett’s jetpack missile – it’s become so iconic it’s basically part of his legend! And it’s not just accessories; the yellow lightsaber Luke Skywalker carried in those vintage Kenner action figures is now officially part of his story. It’s wild to think that even characters designed for toys, like the villain Atha Prime, almost made it into the official universe. It really shows how much impact those early figures had on shaping a galaxy far, far away.
This trend works so well because it appeals to both dedicated fans and people new to the franchise. Those unfamiliar with the toys can still enjoy it as just another cool Star Wars vehicle or character. The INT-4 Interceptor is a perfect example of this, and many consider it one of the best – especially considering it first debuted as a unique Star Wars toy back in 1982, 44 years ago.
The Mandalorian & Grogu is now playing in theaters from Lucasfilm.
