Thrillers are incredibly popular in movies today because they’re masters at keeping viewers hooked. But despite their success, many of the most beloved thriller films haven’t gotten the follow-up movies fans are hoping for. These films excel at creating suspense, delving into what makes people tick, and often involve complex mysteries that unfold before our eyes – keeping audiences captivated for years. Even though some truly deserve sequels, they just haven’t happened.
Some thriller movies, like 10 Cloverfield Lane, Split, and Now You See Me 2, have successfully continued their stories with excellent sequels. However, many other popular thrillers haven’t gotten follow-ups, even if they hinted at larger universes or left storylines unfinished. These well-loved films could really thrive with sequels, despite the fact that their original stories felt complete.
High Life’s Mysterious Ending Left Questions Unanswered
Claire Denis’ 2018 film is a sci-fi thriller about the crew of a spaceship tasked with harvesting energy from a black hole. During their mission, they become subjects in psychological and sexual experiments conducted by the scientist Dibs (Juliette Binoche). The film’s complex, non-traditional narrative, combined with its exciting premise and ambiguous ending, suggests possibilities for a continuation of the story, particularly regarding the unresolved fates of Monte (Robert Pattinson) and Willow (Jessie Ross).
The film touches on themes of loneliness, personal freedom, and simply staying alive. However, there are several interesting plot points left unresolved, and a continuation of the story could explore them. The biggest mystery is what happened to Monte and Willow – did they make it out of the black hole, and could they return to Earth? Another possibility would be to focus on Willow growing up and experiencing more of the universe. Unfortunately, there are currently no plans for a sequel.
Green Room’s Sequel Could Explore the Survivors’ Trauma
Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room is a tense and thrilling horror film about a punk band battling a violent white supremacist group, led by Darcy Banker (Patrick Stewart), after getting trapped in a backstage room. While the film was well-received, there haven’t been any plans announced for a follow-up, despite the potential for a powerful sequel.
A follow-up to the film Green Room could focus on what happens to the characters Pat and Amber after the violent events of the first movie. It could also expand on the criminal underworld briefly shown, turning the story from a desperate fight for survival into a quest for revenge as Pat and Amber take down the remaining criminals and expose their network. Importantly, any sequel should maintain the strong connection to punk rock that made the original film special.
Minority Report Needs a Movie Sequel 24 Years Later
As a huge sci-fi fan, I always hoped we’d get a follow-up to Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report – there was a TV series, sure, but not another movie! The film stars Tom Cruise as John Anderton, and it’s set in a future Washington D.C. where this special police unit, called Precrime, can arrest people before they commit a crime. They use these three gifted people – they call them ‘precogs’ – to predict future offenses. The crazy part is, the precogs actually predict that Anderton will be the one committing a murder, targeting a guy named Leo Crow, and suddenly he’s the one on the run.
Released in 2002, Minority Report was a critical and commercial hit that had the potential to launch a whole series of films, but unfortunately, that never happened. The film’s detailed world, compelling characters, and thought-provoking dystopian ideas are ripe for further exploration, making a sequel – even after 24 years – a truly exciting possibility. It could also be a great way to revisit and update the ideas of author Philip K. Dick for today’s audiences.
Inferno Is the Third Installment in the Robert Langdon Film Series
Based on Dan Brown’s 2013 novel, Inferno is the third film in the Robert Langdon series starring Tom Hanks. Following The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, the movie pairs Langdon with Dr. Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) to stop a dangerous scientist (Ben Foster) in Florence. Though critics didn’t love it, Inferno did well in theaters, making it unexpected that we haven’t seen another film in the series.
In 2021, a TV show based on Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol came out, acting as a backstory to the existing movies. However, fans are still hoping for a direct continuation of the story after Inferno. Dan Brown has written two more Robert Langdon novels – Origin in 2017 and The Secret of Secrets in 2025 – which could be turned into future films. While plans for another movie were announced in May 2025, no further installments in the series have been officially confirmed.
The Cloverfield Paradox Blew Open the Sci-Fi Thriller Franchise
I was really intrigued by The Cloverfield Paradox, the third film in this wonderfully strange Cloverfield series. It brought together a fantastic cast – Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O’Dowd, David Oyelowo, and so many others – and told a story about how an experiment on a space station, involving something called the Shepard particle accelerator, ripped open holes between dimensions. It wasn’t just a standalone story either; it cleverly explained how the events of the first two Cloverfield movies were connected, and it felt like it was laying the groundwork for even more exciting things to come. It was a bold move, and I loved how it expanded the universe!
A fourth installment in the Cloverfield series is in development, with Joe Barton writing the script and Babak Anvari directing, but it’s been a while since we’ve had any updates. It’s unclear whether the new movie will be a direct sequel to the original Cloverfield from 2008, or if it will follow up more closely on the events of The Cloverfield Paradox. Fans are eager to see this creative sci-fi thriller franchise move forward and hope to hear more news soon.
Mr. Brooks Was Planned to Be the First in a Movie Trilogy
The 2007 thriller Mr. Brooks starred Kevin Costner as Earl Brooks, a successful businessman who also happened to be a serial killer. Plans were made for at least two sequels that would have explored Brooks’s internal struggle with his dark side (played by William Hurt) and his mentorship of a new protégé (Dane Cook), all while he attempted to maintain a normal family life. Unfortunately, due to the film’s disappointing performance in theaters, those sequels never happened, though they would have delved even deeper into Brooks’s disturbing world.
Bruce A. Evans, the writer and director of Mr. Brooks, has shared details about planned sequels. He envisioned a storyline where Brooks’ family would be kidnapped, and his daughter (played by Danielle Panabaker) would develop into a psychopath, hinted at in the first film. The planned third movie would have culminated in a very dark ending, with Brooks killing both himself and his daughter. Evans believes this story arc would have been compelling to see on screen.
The Talented Mr. Ripley Has Huge Franchise Potential
The film The Talented Mr. Ripley, based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel, follows con artist Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) as he’s hired to persuade the carefree Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) to come home. Ripley becomes fixated on Dickie’s life and ultimately takes it over, leaving the story open for a compelling sequel. A follow-up film is needed to explore Ripley’s growth into a confident and wealthy criminal mastermind.
Although other movies have been made based on Patricia Highsmith’s work, none of them are part of a continuing film series or direct sequels to the 1999 film, The Talented Mr. Ripley. Future films could be based on the other Ripley novels – Ripley Under Ground, Ripley’s Game, The Boy Who Followed Ripley, and Ripley under Water – continuing the story and further exploring the complex character of Tom Ripley.
Source Code’s Cliffhanger Ending Sets Up a Sequel Perfectly
Duncan Jones’ 2011 sci-fi thriller, Source Code, features Jake Gyllenhaal as Captain Colter Stevens, an army pilot repeatedly sent into a virtual recreation of a train explosion. He relives the same eight minutes each time, trying to uncover the identity of the bomber. The film was a hit thanks to its original idea, impressive visuals, and strong acting. It ended on a cliffhanger that suggested a sequel, but one hasn’t been made yet.
The movie’s ending shows not just one alternate reality, but countless others. This idea of a multiverse allows for fresh storylines and higher stakes without retreading old ground. The military’s ability to travel between these timelines hints at potentially dark future stories, perhaps involving invasions or corruption, in sequels to Source Code. While a sequel has been hinted at for a long time, it hasn’t been made yet.
District 9’s Sequel Has Been Teased For Almost Two Decades
Neill Blomkamp’s 2009 film, District 9, is a highly original and acclaimed science fiction thriller. The movie is presented partly as a documentary and centers on Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley), an ordinary employee of a defense contractor. He’s tasked with moving a community of aliens, nicknamed “Prawns,” to a new location, but a strange substance causes him to slowly transform into one of them, leading to unexpected complications.
The movie District 9 concludes with Wikus fully transforming, the alien mothership departing Earth, and the remaining aliens being moved to District 10. This setup hinted at potential sequels, but so far, none have been made. District 9 offered a thought-provoking look at social issues, and a District 10 could explore similar themes, perhaps by continuing Wikus’s story or starting a new one. Many fans are still hoping to see the story continue.
Ex Machina’s Ending Sets Up a Darker, Westworld-Style Sequel
I revisited Ex Machina recently, and wow, it still holds up. This 2014 film throws you right into a fascinating situation: a programmer named Caleb is invited by his reclusive CEO, Nathan, to evaluate the intelligence of Ava, an incredibly lifelike AI. It’s a tense, thought-provoking thriller, and it was instantly hailed as a modern classic – one of the best films of the decade, honestly. So, the idea of a sequel is… daunting. It’s a perfect film, and there’s a real worry that anything further could ruin what makes it so special.
Given the success of Ex Machina, a sequel would likely do very well. It could continue the story right after the first film ended, following Ava as she navigates the human world. Similar to the show Westworld, a sequel could delve even deeper into complex ideas about what it means to be human, questions of right and wrong, identity, and the impact of technology. Fans have been wanting to know what happens next with Ava for over a decade, making a sequel a highly anticipated prospect.
