The new movie opening this weekend is already a huge success. It earned more from its preview showings than the previous record holder, Scream 7.
The new horror movie Backrooms, from A24 and Chernin Entertainment, earned an impressive $10.4 million during its Thursday night previews. This is a strong start, exceeding the previous best for major horror franchises – $7.8 million for Scream 7. Backrooms also outperformed 2023’s Five Nights at Freddy’s ($10.3 million) and other popular blockbusters like John Wick: Chapter 4 ($8.9 million) and Eternals ($9.5 million) in terms of preview earnings.
Backrooms Is Off to a Great Start
The movie Backrooms is generating significantly more pre-release buzz than any previous A24 film, surpassing the $2.9 million record held by Civil War earlier this year. Current estimates now predict an opening weekend of around $80 million – a substantial increase from earlier projections of $20 million. This would easily beat Civil War‘s $25.5 million domestic opening. Even if Backrooms doesn’t fully reach its projected numbers, it’s still expected to be A24’s biggest opening ever.
The film Backrooms is inspired by the popular online horror story, or “creepypasta,” that gained traction through a YouTube series created by Kane Pixels. Director Parsons is leading the movie adaptation, and the cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor (known for The Man Who Fell to Earth), Renate Reinsve (Presumed Innocent), Mark Duplass (The Creep Tapes), Finn Bennett (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), Lukita Maxwell (The Young Wife), and Avan Jogia (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City). James Wan (Saw) and Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) are producing the film.
Backrooms Offers a Unique Viewing Experience
This movie combines different genres, but it’s a unique horror experience. Instead of relying on sudden scares, it builds tension through its unsettling atmosphere and feeling of loneliness. The story centers on Clark (Ejiofor), who owns a furniture store and stumbles upon a bizarre doorway leading to the Backrooms – a never-ending, eerie labyrinth of empty offices and yellow hallways where the normal rules of time and reality don’t apply. He inadvertently draws his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline (Reinsve), into the strange mystery with him.
This weekend sees a showdown at the box office with the release of the horror film Backrooms. It’s competing with Obsession, a film by up-and-coming director Curry Barker, which surprisingly boosted ticket sales in its second week. The Mandalorian and Grogu is also entering its second weekend, alongside the debut of Backrooms. Rounding out the new releases are Nate Bargatze’s comedy The Breadwinner and the thriller Pressure.
Backrooms is now playing in movie theaters.
