James Gunn Explains Superman and Brainiac’s ‘Beef’ Ahead of Man of Tomorrow

If you’re not familiar with Brainiac, prepare to learn why he’s considered one of the most dangerous and formidable villains in the DC universe. He’s a major challenge for Superman, having defeated him in the past, forcing the hero to recover and try again. Now, this super-intelligent villain is finally making his live-action debut in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow in 2027.

As a Superman fan, I’ve always wondered why Brainiac is such a tough villain for him. To really get why their fights are so intense, you first need to know what their beef even is.

James Gunn used social media to start explaining the character of Braniac to audiences before his debut in the upcoming Superman film starring David Corenswet. This will be Superman’s biggest challenge yet, and surprisingly, he isn’t even aware of the threat.

James Gunn Explains Why Brainiac and Superman Are At War

James Gunn explained on X (formerly Twitter) that Brainiac represents pure intelligence devoid of empathy. Because Superman is fundamentally human, Gunn understands why the two characters are natural enemies. Brainiac first appeared in a comic book on this day in Action Comics #242.

To understand the deep-seated hatred between them, and all the attempts they’ve made to destroy each other, you have to go back almost 70 years. It all began with the release of Action Comics #242 in 1958, which introduced a remarkably intelligent robot – or cyborg, depending on how you look at it – created by DC Comics writers Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino.

Braniac is completely consumed by a desire to collect all the knowledge in the universe, but it was how he went about getting it that ultimately brought him into conflict with Superman.

This is a developing story so check back momentarily for more info!
