The Testaments’ June & Agnes Endgame Officially Revealed By Showrunner

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the season 1 finale of The Testaments! According to creator Bruce Miller, he’s already planned out how the stories of June and Agnes will conclude.

As a big fan of The Handmaid’s Tale, I was really interested to hear what the showrunner shared about where June and Agnes’ story is heading. It’s fascinating to see the sequel focus on Hannah, who’s now known as Agnes in Gilead, and how she’s being raised with the expectation of becoming a Handmaid. The really heartbreaking part is she doesn’t even know June is her mother, not yet anyway. But the first season of The Testaments changed everything – she finally learned the truth! I’m so curious to see how she processes that and what it means for her future.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Bruce Miller revealed that the story arc of The Testaments will ultimately lead to a reunion between June and Agnes. He estimates this will happen over the course of three to four seasons, depending on various factors. Miller emphasized the importance of fulfilling this storyline, as the potential for their reunion has been a central theme of both The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments from the beginning.

Check out what Miller had to say below:

I have a little news: I’m hoping to get June and Hannah (or Agnes) together before the end of the month.

I’m envisioning the show lasting three or four seasons, but I’m open to continuing if we have compelling stories to tell. While I don’t want the show to stagnate, the complex world of Gilead and the strength of the actors make extending it – even to a fourth season – feel manageable. Ultimately, as long as the studios involved – Disney, Hulu, MGM, and Amazon – are willing to support it, I’m eager to keep working on it. It’s a truly rewarding and impactful project.

After a long and difficult journey, June was finally reunited with her daughter, driven by her unwavering determination to bring her home. The sixth season of The Handmaid’s Tale concluded with June and the Handmaids freeing Boston, and June choosing to document her experiences in Gilead, hoping to inspire future generations. Though viewers see June as a hero, children like those at Agnes’ school are taught to view her as a dangerous terrorist. This stark contrast in perception will likely be a central theme in upcoming seasons.

It seems likely that June and Agnes will eventually be reunited before the series ends. Their last direct interaction was in season four of The Handmaid’s Tale, where Agnes was punished and held captive in a glass cage because of June’s escape. The Testaments has shown that Agnes doesn’t fully recall June as her birth mother, and this missing memory will likely be a key element as the story continues in the sequel series.

With her daughter now aware of who she really is, the second season of The Testaments can concentrate on bringing them together, alongside the other storylines. Daisy, working as June’s informant, is trying to build a bigger group of girls to fight against Gilead, and Aunt Lydia believes Agnes is a promising young woman who could help bring about genuine change within the country. While the show will ultimately lead to June and Agnes finding each other, their journey will be complex and take time.

It seems the creator, Miller, has a clear plan for how The Testaments will unfold, drawing inspiration from Margaret Atwood’s original book while also expanding the story and resolving plot points first introduced in The Handmaid’s Tale. This careful approach promises a satisfying connection when characters finally meet, though it will take time to build the necessary context.
