Aegon’s Dream Is Officially Changing Rhaenyra Targaryen With Book-Accurate Twist In House Of The Dragon Season 3

Rhaenyra’s return in House of the Dragon season 3 will burn a key part of her past reputation.

With the premiere of House of the Dragon season 3 fast approaching on June 21st on HBO and HBO Max, Entertainment Weekly has published a new feature story. The article includes interviews with Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen), Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon II Targaryen), Ewan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen), and the show’s co-creator and showrunner, Ryan Condal. Along with first-look photos from the new season, the cast and creator have shared hints about the more intense character developments viewers can expect.

The upcoming season will show Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen facing increasingly difficult and risky challenges. While she’s always been determined and willing to fight for her claim to the Iron Throne – even making tough choices – Rhaenyra hasn’t acted with cruel intentions, despite what her rivals, led by Aegon, have tried to portray. By the end of season 2 of House of the Dragon, she remains the more relatable main character.

According to showrunner Ryan Condal, season 3 of House of the Dragon will show Rhaenyra Targaryen becoming increasingly ruthless. The series has previously presented a mostly sympathetic view of her, but now it will explore the darker side of her character, mirroring her infamous reputation in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, where she’s often compared to the cruel King Maegor. Upcoming episodes will depict a growing religious zealotry that drives her to take increasingly extreme positions.

The intense religious belief stems from a prophetic dream Aegon the Conqueror had, foretelling a devastating winter and darkness originating in the North that would destroy the world. He dreamed that only a Targaryen ruler on the Iron Throne could unite people and save them. Viserys believed his daughter, Rhaenyra, might be the savior foretold in the prophecy, and her determination to fulfill it will likely lead her down a dangerous and ruthless path.

According to showrunner Ryan Condal, Rhaenyra Targaryen will be much more proactive in season 3, unlike her previous role where she mostly reacted to events. She’ll move beyond simply trying to survive and will start taking charge. At the same time, Aemond and Aegon will both be heading down darker paths, with Aegon, as the acting ruler, determined to maintain the Greens’ control of the Iron Throne – and ultimately, to secure it for himself while his brother is away.

The third season of House of the Dragon will have eight episodes, airing weekly on Sunday nights beginning June 21st. HBO has already greenlit a fourth season, expected in 2028, and according to the showrunner, that will be the series finale. This means the increasingly complex and darker path Rhaenyra takes in season 3 signals a significant change in the show’s overall feel as the story of the Dance of the Dragons nears its end.
