4 Must-Watch Fantasy Movies Still Begging for a Sequel

From the early days of cinema with films like The Lost World and The Wizard of Oz, this genre has given us many beloved classics. These movies, known for their adventure, imagination, and ability to transport viewers to other worlds, set the standard for filmmaking. Compared to these iconic stories, many modern movies feel lacking. It’s time to revisit some of the most popular franchises and standalone films with a final installment, both to please fans and to revitalize the genre for today’s audiences.

While it’s tempting to leave classic movies untouched, some truly deserve sequels – particularly those that ended with unresolved storylines. Some of these films were initially dismissed or didn’t perform well in theaters, but have since gained a following and feel incomplete. With Arnold Schwarzenegger preparing to reprise his role as Conan, here are four other fantasy movies that would benefit from a follow-up.

The Goonies Could Revive Hollywood’s Sense of Adventure

Richard Donner gave audiences some of the greatest films of the ’80s, but none come close to the cultural impact of The Goonies. Set in Astoria, Oregon, it follows a group of kid friends as they set out on a quest to find the long-lost treasure of infamous pirate One-Eyed Willy. To get their hands on the loot, they have to outwit the fugitive Fratelli crime family and stay one step ahead of a series of elaborate booby-traps.

For years, rumors have swirled about a possible continuation of the beloved film, only to be met with silence from the studios. Fans are equally split – some consider the original perfect and want it left alone, while others eagerly anticipate seeing the characters return. Ultimately, there’s a demand for classic adventure stories, and a revival of this cult film could reignite a love for fantasy in a new audience.

Jumper Is the Underseen Superhero Movie the World Wasn’t Ready For

Before Marvel’s big hit with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hayden Christensen starred in the 2000s superhero film Jumper. The movie centers on David Rice, a young man who discovers he can teleport anywhere he imagines. But using his powers for personal gain attracts the notice of a secretive group determined to eliminate people with his abilities.

The movie Jumper ended with a tantalizing hint of what could have become a truly exceptional indie superhero series. Unfortunately, it didn’t perform well in theaters, and plans for more installments were cancelled. Even though it was largely ignored at the time, Jumper has gained a devoted following and still feels like a film with unrealized potential – it could have blended fantasy and superhero concepts in a more realistic and relatable way than many mainstream Marvel movies.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Deserves More Love

In 2003, Sean Connery starred in a movie based on the comic book series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but it wasn’t a success financially. The film is a fantasy adventure featuring famous characters from literature – like Tom Sawyer, the Invisible Man, and Allan Quatermain – who team up to prevent a war in Europe. Their mission quickly turns into a chase for a mysterious person profiting from the potential conflict.

Despite its initial reception, the film was a courageous effort to adapt a fantastic comic book. Over the years, viewers have come to appreciate its adventurous spirit, bold scope, and fresh take on well-known characters. The core idea was incredibly clever, and it would be wonderful to see it revisited with other stories by the same author.

The Time Is Right For A Zorro Legacy Sequel

As a classic movie fan, I always loved how Zorro really defined the swashbuckling adventure genre back in Hollywood’s heyday. But for a while, he kind of faded into the background until Antonio Banderas brought him back to life in 1998, playing a Zorro who was actually mentoring a new hero – a young thief named Alejandro Murietta, trained by the original Diego de la Vega! The idea was that Zorro was helping Murietta take down the corrupt official who’d ruined his life. We thought that story ended with The Legend of Zorro in 2005, but honestly, fans – myself included – have been hoping for another Zorro movie ever since!

Look, I’ve been hearing whispers for ages about another Zorro movie, and honestly, it’s about time! Antonio Banderas has even hinted he’s ready to pass the sword to a new hero, which feels right. In a landscape starved for genuinely good fantasy adventures, a return to the swashbuckling world of Zorro would be a welcome sight, and frankly, long overdue. I’m really hoping we get something special.
