Be warned: This article reveals major plot details from the first episode of Rick & Morty season 9, titled “There’s something about Morty.”
Throughout its eight seasons, Rick and Morty has introduced many memorable villains, but Evil Morty has consistently been the most popular. He’s now back for season 9! The season premiere quickly jumped back into the show’s signature chaos, and Evil Morty’s return immediately made the episode a major event.
I was so hyped to see Evil Morty back in Season 7, especially in ‘Unmortricken’! He really came through and helped take down Rick Prime, which was amazing. Honestly, every time he’s shown up, he’s stolen the show, and his part in ‘There’s Something About Morty’ is still something everyone’s talking about – he’s just that good!
The season 8 finale of Rick and Morty hinted that Mr. Poopybutthole might become a villain, leading many to expect a new direction for the show. So, it was a big surprise when the series’ main villain appeared right at the beginning of season 9 – and even more surprising that he and Rick started the season working together.
Inevitably, the two ended up on opposite sides, leading to an explosive fight between Rick and Evil Morty, which is easily the show’s best battle yet. However, considering the two were initially fighting side-by-side to take down a potentially world-ending threat, there’s plenty to unpack regarding this villain’s return.
From his true motivations to his unexpected fate, “There’s Something About Morty” gave us plenty of information about why Evil Morty was once again sharing the screen with our protagonists. So, here’s everything you need to know about his latest inclusion.
Why Evil Morty & Rick Are Working Together In Rick & Morty Season 9
Throughout Rick and Morty, Rick and Evil Morty have usually been enemies, so it was surprising to see them cooperate. However, this wasn’t the first time they’d teamed up. This time, though, their alliance in season 9 was different: Evil Morty forced Rick into it with blackmail, instead of them working together towards a common objective.
While Rick and Morty did face incredibly dangerous enemies capable of widespread destruction, Evil Morty forced Rick into these situations. He threatened to eliminate every version of the Smith family in all dimensions, except for the Mortys. Rick agreed to participate, but he didn’t tell Morty the real reason why, keeping his motives hidden.
Predictably, Morty discovered what was happening, and Evil Morty used this to recruit him into a mission against The Collective. During this, Evil Morty intentionally tried to make Morty feel jealous by constantly pointing out that Rick was adventuring with him, even though Rick made it clear he was only involved because Evil Morty had something over him.
Okay, so at first I thought Rick was just being a softie, trying to protect Morty’s feelings. But it turned out he was actually telling the truth! This was really driven home when he decided to double-cross Evil Morty and destroy the Omega Device. That move completely neutralized the villain, effectively ending their twisted partnership and leaving Evil Morty powerless against Rick and Morty. It was a bold move, and it definitely paid off in terms of shifting the power dynamic.
The clash between Rick and Evil Morty drove the entire episode’s plot and is a big reason why early reviews for Rick and Morty season 9 are so positive. However, Rick didn’t appear to mind teaming up with Evil Morty, which makes his eventual betrayal a little confusing.
Why Rick Betrayed Evil Morty In “There’s Something About Morty”
There are a few possible reasons why Rick might have betrayed Evil Morty, the simplest being that he didn’t actually like working with him as much as it seemed. Despite appearing to get along well and sharing a similar mindset during their missions, Rick may have secretly felt resentment about their partnership.
Evil Morty is one of the few characters who could truly challenge Rick intellectually, and being around him was likely frustrating. Therefore, Rick’s choice to destroy the Omega Device, freeing himself from that situation, suggests he disliked Evil Morty on a personal level and that influenced his decision.
Similarly, he may have simply hated working for someone. Rick has always been bad at taking orders, and despite frequently going on adventures with Morty and other allies, he hates being told what to do. Therefore, even if he did actually like Evil Morty’s company, his own ego wouldn’t allow him to be a sidekick for long.
Honestly, knowing Rick as well as I think I do, this whole situation feels driven by something surprisingly small – a petty grievance, maybe. But the real heart of it, I believe, is his family. It seems Rick betrayed Evil Morty because he genuinely feared for their lives. With the Omega Device, Evil Morty wasn’t just a threat, he was an existential one – capable of wiping out every version of the Smith family across all realities. That’s a pretty powerful motivator, even for someone as cynical as Rick.
It’s one thing to take away Rick’s powerful technology, but he’s fiercely protective of his family and won’t let anything harm them. The season 8 finale of Rick and Morty explored the bond between Beth and Rick, and throughout the series, it’s become clear he cares for each family member in his unique way.
Unsurprisingly then, with his loved ones threatened, Rick was probably desperate to ensure the Omega Device couldn’t be used. This explains his decision, and with Morty also being jealous of his relationship with Evil Morty, Rick may have also taken this into consideration when choosing to sever ties.
Evil Morty’s True Goal Is Far From What Anyone Expected
Following his escape from the Central Finite Curve, Evil Morty appeared to settle down and find peace in a seemingly perfect dimension tailored to his villainous nature. Though he briefly returned to help Rick defeat Rick Prime in season 7, he didn’t go back to that idyllic life afterward, suggesting he no longer found fulfillment in it.
You know, when I really think about Rick’s behavior in “There’s Something About Morty,” it seems like it all came down to two things: wanting to get a rise out of Morty and genuinely liking being around him. It was so weird, though! Here’s this guy who’s usually so detached and negative, and he’s actively trying to make Morty jealous about his relationship with Rick – especially considering how much Rick hates other Ricks. It just didn’t quite add up, and made me realize there was more going on than just typical Rick cynicism.
Likewise, it was equally bizarre watching him use the Omega Device simply as a threat to spend time with Rick, given the pair’s history. There wasn’t some deeper plan at play here or even a reason provided as to why Evil Morty might want to use Rick; it simply seemed like he actively wanted to spend time doing missions together.
While they did save the multiverse, the villain’s actions have always been driven by self-interest—except when it comes to Mortys. This suggests the thrill of the adventure was more important to him than any grand plan. Ultimately, Evil Morty might just be like other Ricks and Mortys, secretly wanting someone to acknowledge his efforts.
Even if Evil Morty just wanted to make Morty jealous, the fact that he was motivated by such a simple, human desire was a brilliant move. It made the season 9 premiere one of the best Rick and Morty episodes in a long time, and it made an already great villain even more complex.
What Happens To Evil Morty At The End Of Season 9’s Premiere?
Rick and Evil Morty were constantly outsmarting each other during their fight. Just when Evil Morty seemed to win, the Time Cops arrested him. Both were incredibly clever, always finding answers to their opponent’s moves – that’s why Evil Morty was able to use Rick’s own time-stopping trick against him.
After successfully copying Rick’s time travel technology, Evil Morty managed to evade an attack by the Smith family and seemed ready to kill Rick himself. However, the Time Cops intervened at the last moment. The officer who made the arrest revealed that Rick had warned him about this possibility, implying he knew Evil Morty would try to escape this way.
So, after everything, Evil Morty actually gave up and let them take him. The really weird part? The post-credits scene showed he wasn’t sent to some super-high-tech prison or anything – just a normal, secure facility. He was totally expecting them to wipe his mind or something way worse, but the guard basically said whatever they were doing wasn’t going to be a real punishment, which just blew my mind. It was a really unexpected twist!
At the end of the latest episode, Evil Morty is still locked up, and the final joke hints he might get incredibly fit while in prison. While it’s certain he’ll return to Rick and Morty eventually, he’s currently just a regular prisoner traveling between galaxies.
