Kayce Faces The Worst Villain In Yellowstone History In Marshals Season 1 Finale

Be warned, the following contains spoilers for the season 1 finale of Marshals, episode 13, “Wolves at the Door.” The first season of Marshals concludes by introducing what many are calling the most dangerous villain ever seen in the Yellowstone universe. This Luke Grimes-led series is intended to launch a new direction for Taylor Sheridan’s Western dramas, and it’s the first spin-off from the main Yellowstone show. The story follows Kayce as he navigates life after the sudden loss of Monica. Unlike Yellowstone, which focuses on the Dutton family, Marshals is structured like a typical network television show, with the team solving a different case each week.

The TV show Marshals premiered late in the 2025-2026 season and quickly became a hit, rising to the top of the ratings. As the most-watched new show on network television, it’s no surprise CBS quickly renewed it for a second season. This allowed the first season to end with a bold finale, “Wolves at the Door,” which revisited the show’s *Yellowstoneinspired origins by focusing on land disputes in Montana and revealed the true antagonists – the Weavers.

Marshals Season 1 Finale Establishes The Weavers As Its Main Villain

Tom and Dolly Weaver were introduced this season as new characters in the Yellowstone universe. They formed a connection with Kayce and Tate, and, like many new families moving to Montana in the series, they initially aimed to challenge John Dutton III’s power. This rivalry between the Duttons and other ranching families was a common theme throughout the show. While Yellowstone also dealt with issues like government interference and conflicts with Broken Rock, the most compelling storylines often revolved around these rancher feuds.

You know, watching Kayce on ‘Yellowstone,’ I always felt like he was a bit separate from the big power struggles. He wasn’t in those plots so much as he got pulled in when someone threatened his family. This season feels different though. He’s really on his own dealing with the Weavers, who are now straight-up trying to take over East Camp after he refused to sell. And in the latest episode, ‘Wolves at the Door,’ things got crazy. There was another attempt on Rainwater’s life, and Kayce helped out. He almost became a target himself, but his fellow marshals saved him. Then, the episode dropped a huge bomb – it turned out Tom was the one behind the attack all along! It’s a real twist, and it sets Kayce up for a tough fight, it seems.

Kayce is unaware of the danger and mistakenly trusts Tom and Dolly when they offer to take Tate fishing. Meanwhile, the first season of Marshals ends with Calvin and Belle being attacked, and Monica’s son unknowingly boards a plane with the bad guys. Kayce, back at East Camp, continues to spend time with Dolly, completely unaware of the trouble his son is in.

Why The Weavers Are Worse Than Any Of Yellowstone’s Villains

The Weavers aren’t a completely new type of enemy in the Yellowstone universe. It’s expected that the Duttons would clash with people trying to take their land, especially since they’ve held power for so long. Many of the show’s most memorable villains, like Dan Jenkins and Malcolm and Teal Beck, have tried to achieve their goals through underhanded tactics. However, what makes the Weavers different is the deep sense of betrayal that accompanies their cruelty.

The Weavers first appeared in the show when Kayce and his team rescued Tom from an accident. Instead of befriending the entire team, they quickly focused their attention on the Dutton family. Dolly was initially presented as a potential love interest for Kayce, especially after Monica passed away, which made him hesitant. Over time, though, Kayce has become more receptive to the idea of a relationship with her. At the same time, Tom has earned Kayce’s trust, and Kayce now feels comfortable letting Tate spend time with him unsupervised.

Throughout the first season of Yellowstone, Kayce consistently treated the Weavers with respect and kindness, always being polite and helpful. Even when he refused to sell East Camp, he did so compassionately, sharing his own personal losses. Therefore, Tom’s violent reaction to being denied what he wanted positions him as the most ruthless villain the show has ever seen.

What The Weavers’ Threat Means For Kayce’s Future & Marshals Season 2

With Belle and Calvin’s storyline left unresolved, the new season of Marshals needs to quickly reveal who attacked them. The glimpse of Tom’s associate is a crucial clue that will help Kayce realize the Weavers aren’t trustworthy. While Tom is taking Tate fishing, he might not actually hurt the boy – he could be strategically building a long-term plan to gain control of East Camp and further connect with the Dutton family.

Since “Marshals” airs on a major network, the storyline involving the Weavers will likely be a central focus throughout its second season. Although it started mid-season, CBS has confirmed the show will return in Fall 2026 earlier than anticipated, and with more episodes. This gives the series the opportunity to thoroughly explore the developing conflict in Montana, while Kayce continues to assist the team with cases in the area.
