Prime Video’s Best The Boys Replacement Has Already Been Canceled

Caution: spoilers ahead for The Boys’ series finale.

Considering its graphic content and frequent use of strong language, Prime Video likely didn’t anticipate just how popular The Boys would become when it premiered in 2019. However, the show’s violent and compelling story quickly broke into the mainstream, leading Prime Video to create spin-off series and establishing Homelander as a truly memorable villain. The Boys became one of the defining shows of the late 2010s and early 2020s, offering a fresh and impactful take on the superhero genre.

The conclusion of The Boys after season 5 will leave a significant gap in Prime Video’s lineup. It’s one of Amazon’s most popular and successful shows, and nothing else currently available quite matches its unique tone. Invincible is great, but it’s very different – more animated and less realistic. Vought Rising will expand on the story, but as a prequel, it will primarily fill in details we already know. And while Spider-Noir shares some similarities, it doesn’t seem to have the same potential to run for many seasons.

Believe it or not, Prime Video already had a show that could have been the next The Boys, but it was unexpectedly canceled after just two seasons.

The Boys Was Setting Up Its Own Perfect Replacement

If Gen V hadn’t been canceled before its third season, it had the potential to become Prime Video’s next big superhero hit, following The Boys. The show, which premiered in 2023, spent two seasons developing a new generation of rebellious, super-powered students. The second season ended with these students poised to enter the real world – or, instead, becoming fugitives after a dramatic confrontation – setting them up to continue the story right after the events of The Boys season 5.

Now that The Boys have broken up and its members are moving on, the heroes from Gen V seemed poised to take over their role – tracking down dangerous and evil super-powered individuals and taking them down with ruthless efficiency. The spin-off series looked like it was setting up the story of a new team dedicated to fighting against Vought, ready to carry on the battle after Billy Butcher’s eventual defeat.

The last episode of The Boys suggests a similar path forward. Stan Edgar has regained control of Vought, and President Singer is restarting the Federal Bureau of Superhuman Affairs to find the supes who are now on the loose after Homelander’s defeat. At the same time, Starlight encourages Marie Moreau to focus on long-term survival instead of joining the final battle with Homelander, effectively handing over the responsibility of policing rogue supes to her.

Season 3 of Gen V felt like it could have been the beginning of The Boys season 2, with Marie and her friends facing off against a newly strengthened Vought led by Stan Edgar.

Why Vought Rising Might End Up Being Prime Video’s The Boys Replacement

While promising, Vought Rising isn’t a true continuation of The Boys. It’s a prequel set years earlier, showing us the origins of characters like Soldier Boy and Stormfront, and essentially leading up to the events of The Boys season 5.

There’s a small chance that Vought Rising could be both a prequel and a sequel at the same time, much like Better Call Saul which told a story happening both before and after Breaking Bad.

As a huge fan of The Boys, I was really surprised by what happened with Soldier Boy in the last season. They just…left him out of the big finale and put him back on ice! It feels like Prime Video has bigger plans for Jensen Ackles and his character in the current timeline of the show, and they’re keeping him around for future seasons.

Fans noticed Soldier Boy kept mentioning Stormfront might still be alive, a theory that originated with viewers after her departure in season 3. Given that both Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash are involved in the upcoming series Vought Rising, there’s a possibility Soldier Boy and Stormfront could cross paths again, set in the show’s 2027 timeline. Now that Homelander is out of the picture, Stormfront might resurface and try to revive her relationship with Soldier Boy, with the goal of global domination.

If Vought Rising featured events happening in the present day, it would be a stronger contender to take over from The Boys. However, Gen V ultimately seemed better positioned to continue the story after the conflict between Homelander and Butcher concluded.
