Scarlett Johansson’s hit sci-fi film is about to be unleashed on HBO Max.
Scarlett Johansson is one of the highest-grossing actors of all time, largely thanks to her role as Black Widow in 10 Marvel movies between 2010’s Iron Man 2 and her standalone film, Black Widow (2021). She recently joined the Jurassic World franchise with the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth (2025). Beyond blockbusters, Johansson has starred in critically acclaimed sci-fi films like Her, Under the Skin (both 2013), and Lucy (2014), which earned nearly $470 million worldwide. Now, another of her sci-fi projects is coming to a major streaming platform.
I’m so excited! Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs is finally coming to HBO Max in just two weeks! It’s an amazing stop-motion animated film about a young boy who travels to a trash island to rescue his dog after all dogs are banished from a Japanese city because of a flu outbreak. It originally came out eight years ago, and I can’t wait to watch it again (or for you to discover it!).
Starting June 1st, you’ll be able to watch Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs on HBO Max. Warner Bros. Discovery also announced that several other films will be added to the streaming service on that date, including A History of Violence (2005), Contagion (2011), Hell or High Water (2016), Mid90s (2018), Midsommar (2019), Room (2015), and The Rock (1996).
The voice cast of Isle of Dogs is incredibly star-studded, featuring Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bob Balaban, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Murray, Kunichi Nomura, Akira Takayama, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand, Scarlett Johansson, Liev Schreiber, F. Murray Abraham, Tilda Swinton, Yoko Ono, Harvey Keitel, Ken Watanabe, Mari Natsuki, Fisher Stevens, Nijirō Murakami, Courtney B. Vance, Yojiro Noda, Frank Wood, Roman Coppola, Anjelica Huston, and Kara Hayward.
When Isle of Dogs came out, critics loved it, giving it a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They praised the beautiful stop-motion animation as some of Wes Anderson’s finest work and called the story charming and heartwarming. Audiences also enjoyed the film, giving it an 87% score.
Critics widely praised Isle of Dogs, with some calling it a masterpiece. Adele Campisi of Loud and Clear Reviews highlighted its originality, comparing it favorably to Anderson’s other films like The Royal Tenenbaums, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Doug Jamieson of The Jam Report described it as another visually stunning and uniquely quirky film from director Wes Anderson.
Mike Scott, writing for the Times-Picayune, called the work “a delightful and engaging treasure that is both playful and profound, funny and touching, lighthearted and charming—and a true work of art.” Rick Bentley of the Tribune News Service declared it Anderson’s animated masterpiece, adding to a career already full of memorable achievements.
The film Isle of Dogs was a commercial success, earning $73 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. It also received critical acclaim, being nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score, composed by Alexandre Desplat.
