The new movie, Is God Is, opened in theaters last week and has been a hit with both critics and audiences. It currently has a 98% rating from critics and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating widespread praise.

This movie is adapted from a play and tells the story of two sisters, Racine and Anaia, seeking revenge on their estranged father. They reconnect with their mother, who reveals a horrific truth: their father attempted to kill her, resulting in severe burns to herself and, especially, Anaia.

So, things really get going when our mother asks us to kill our dad – that’s where the whole revenge plot kicks off. I, Racine, was honestly kind of fired up about it, almost eager, while my sister, Anaia, was much more hesitant. The idea of taking a life, especially our father’s, really bothered her. As we went after him, we kept running into people who knew him, and honestly, almost everyone had a negative story to tell.

By the end of the film, the twins are on the verge of finishing their task and bringing positive news back to their mother. The climactic showdown is gripping, featuring a standout performance by Sterling K. Brown, and fundamentally alters the sisters’ lives.

Racine and Anaia Confront Their Father

During the third act, Racine and Anaia visit their father and are surprised to find he has another set of twins – two boys – and a new wife. This wife, portrayed by Janelle Monáe, seems frightened of her husband. The audience sees her secretly preparing to leave and travel across the country, saying goodbye to her children without revealing she won’t be returning.

Racine and Anaia unexpectedly encounter Monáe while she’s leaving, leading to a heated argument. During the confrontation, they reveal a surprising family connection: they share the same father as Monáe’s sons. Despite this shared history and the pain it brings up, the argument quickly worsens, tragically culminating in Racine killing Monáe in a fit of rage.

The twins then went to the front door and greeted their siblings, who thought they were performers their father had sent for their birthday. One of the boys cruelly commented on Anaia’s burn scars, instantly enraging Racine, who killed him. Racine then killed the other brother, but was knocked unconscious during the fight.

Their father arrives home next. While credited as the Monster in Is God Is, Sterling K. Brown doesn’t immediately appear frightening. He seems normal and collected at first, but his calmness is actually unsettling. He’s strangely relaxed considering the circumstances, even walking past his deceased son to calmly make a sandwich. He acknowledges his older children, greeting Anaia as she hides under the table.

At first, the father claims he only intended to harm their mother, not the children, but his lie is exposed when he attacks Anaia, revealing his true intentions. The actor delivering this performance is exceptional, showcasing some of his finest work to date. Racine eventually recovers and joins forces with her sister, and together they manage to subdue their father, restrain him in a bathtub, and tragically set him on fire.

Racine’s Death And The Birth Of Anaia’s Daughter

It appeared the sisters had succeeded in their plan, but then Racine was suddenly pulled into the fire by her father and perished. Anaia escaped and watched helplessly as the house, and her family inside, burned to the ground. They achieved their revenge, but it came at a devastating price.

Anaia then shares how she later told her daughter stories about her aunt. This heartfelt moment emphasizes what Racine sacrificed when she let anger and revenge consume her. Though their father ultimately died, Racine’s loss of her sister revealed that any sense of triumph she felt was ultimately empty.
