Xbox has had a busy year, with a major company reorganization and some changes to Xbox Game Pass pricing. This week also marks the release of Forza Horizon 6, the latest game in the incredibly popular Forza Horizon series, which has become the main focus for the franchise.
The company continues to offer Xbox Free Play Days, letting anyone—whether they have Xbox Game Pass or not—try out select games for free on weekends. And now, there’s a new promotion starting this week that everyone can enjoy, without needing a Game Pass subscription.
Pure Xbox has highlighted two new free games you can download, perfect for some weekend entertainment.
Xbox Series X/S owners can now download two free, animated backgrounds for Forza Horizon 6. One background gently animates the game’s cover art, showing Mount Fuji and cars racing in Japan. The other features a winding road decorated with beautiful cherry blossoms.
Even if you don’t have an Xbox Game Pass subscription, you can still get these backgrounds. They might even make you want to try Forza Horizon 6, but our review points out that while it’s a significant game for Xbox, it sometimes feels like it relies too much on what’s already been done well in previous installments.
Microsoft and PlayStation have both offered dynamic backgrounds for a while now, often releasing them alongside new game launches—like with Forza Horizon 6. These backgrounds are a fun way to celebrate popular games, particularly those with a vibrant, lifestyle focus, such as the Forza series.
It’s too early to say how well Forza Horizon 6 will do. The Forza series is in a bit of an unusual position right now. The last traditional Forza game, Forza Motorsport, came out in 2023, but it didn’t receive a positive reaction from players. This led to changes within the Forza team at Microsoft. It now looks like the Horizon games will be the main focus of the Forza franchise going forward.
