As a huge sci-fi fan, I’m always browsing Netflix for something new to watch. Of course, everyone knows about hits like Stranger Things and Black Mirror, but I love digging a little deeper. Netflix actually has a ton of lesser-known sci-fi shows that are seriously good. There’s this one anime in particular that totally blew me away – it’s like if Terminator and Ghost in the Shell had a baby, it would be this show!
Netflix launched Terminator Zero in August 2024, marking the first Terminator television series since Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles appeared in the late 2000s. This new installment reimagined the franchise as an anime and told a standalone story, separate from the events involving the Connor family. A notable change was the setting: Terminator Zero took place in Japan, offering a fresh, international perspective to the series.
Critics generally liked the series, giving it an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers also enjoyed it, with a 79% rating. This is a significant improvement compared to the reception of every Terminator movie released since Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991, which have mostly received mixed or negative reviews.
In February 2026, Netflix announced it was canceling Terminator Zero after only one season. This was disappointing, as the show successfully combined the world of Terminator with anime-style storytelling, offering a fresh take on a franchise that had faced many challenges in recent years.
Terminator’s World Perfectly Suited The Anime Style
The Terminator series is known for its action, but Terminator Zero showed that action isn’t limited to live-action films. The animated series allowed for action sequences that were either too imaginative for a live-action movie or would have been much harder to create.
What really makes Terminator Zero work is how well the Terminator universe fits with anime storytelling. The action sequences are great, but the show also takes time to develop its characters and explore their feelings in a way that’s more nuanced than what you typically see in the Terminator films.
The show’s story and atmosphere felt similar to Ghost in the Shell, particularly the popular 1995 movie based on Masamune Shirow’s manga. While Ghost in the Shell was set in 2029, and Terminator Zero took place in 1997 (the day before Judgment Day), the technological turmoil and chaos present in both stories worked well together.
Terminator Zero Deserved A Second Season
Despite its strengths as both an anime and a continuation of the Terminator story, it’s disappointing that Terminator Zero won’t have a second season. The Terminator movies have faced challenges recently, and this Netflix series offered a welcome new direction that deserved another chance.
The series Terminator Zero left many storylines open, and it felt like it could have continued for several seasons. After decades of stories centered on John and Sarah Connor and different versions of the T-800, it was refreshing to follow a completely new group of characters connected to the larger Terminator universe.
The show’s anime style helped it look and feel unique. A multi-season run of Terminator Zero could have really solidified the idea that the Terminator series can thrive even without the Connors, as long as the threat of dangerous technology and artificial intelligence remains. Unfortunately, Netflix chose not to continue the series, which is a shame, but thankfully the eight episodes we have are still available to watch.
