Anyone who watches The Boys probably wasn’t surprised to see Homelander act like a coward at the very end. His strange obsession with a baby, stemming from his feelings for Madelyn Stillwell, showed he had deep-seated insecurities. Ultimately, his own actions led to his downfall.
Okay, so watching Homelander finally lose his powers was… complicated. Part of me was cheering, honestly, because he’d been such a jerk for so long. But then it got really awkward to watch! Kimiko hitting him with that radiation, taking away everything he was born with, set up this huge fight with Butcher, and Homelander just completely broke down. He was begging for his life, even offering… well, it was disturbing, let’s just say that. But the really scary thing was realizing what truly terrified him just before all that went down.
Homelander Could Never Escape His Fatherhood Failures
Homelander’s story has largely focused on his troubled upbringing and the absence of a stable parental figure. While he experienced visions of a motherly figure named Madelyn, appearing to him as an angel, these were hallucinations that fueled his delusions of being a god. His biological father, Soldier Boy, initially seemed interested in helping Homelander become immortal and all-powerful, but ultimately revealed his true feelings: he saw his son as immature and disappointing.
Watching Homelander, it’s heartbreaking to see how he completely projects his own messed-up relationship with his father onto poor Ryan. He just assumes, never actually asking, that Ryan desperately wants his approval because, well, he’s Homelander! It’s clear he doesn’t understand what being a dad is really about – he never had that himself – but he’s so stuck on thinking that his power and status should automatically fix everything, even emotional connections. He honestly seems to believe being powerful is enough to be a good father, and it’s just…sad.
Okay, so seeing Ryan finally call Homelander out – really tell him the truth, just like Soldier Boy did – was huge. It finally seemed to hit Homelander that he needs to connect with his human side to actually have relationships. But that’s the thing, he doesn’t have a human side! He was raised by scientists, completely disconnected. At least Ryan had his mom, Becca, to teach him about being human. And Soldier Boy, we found out, wasn’t always a Supe. Homelander is just… different. He’s the only one I’ve ever seen with absolutely no trace of humanity in him.
Homelander’s Daddy Issues Were the Catalyst for His Death
Homelander’s carefully constructed public image cracks during his Easter Sunday speech when the teleprompter instructs him to call the American people his children and himself their father. This triggers the suppressed anger he feels towards humanity, stemming from a belief that they have disappointed him. He then launches into a rant consistent with his tyrannical nature, a display so extreme it leads everyone to believe he’s about to kill them.
Surprisingly, Butcher experiences a similar turning point after Homelander dies. The loss of his dog, Terror, pushes him to his limit. Although Terror died peacefully, it reminded Butcher of his long-held belief that humanity had let him down, and his quest for revenge against Supes was all he had left. Like Homelander, Butcher ultimately dies, but he finds some peace in seeing a kind face before the end, a reminder that people are capable of goodness.
The idea that Homelander’s biggest weakness stems from his relationship with his father – both his own father’s failings and his own inability to be a good father – is complicated by the fact that he was always emotionally fragile. He desperately craved approval and built his identity around being admired, but struggled to offer genuine affection, a result of his difficult upbringing. Even after finding father figures and a son, he couldn’t overcome his need to feel superior. Ultimately, Homelander is responsible for his own isolation.
The Boys is available to stream on Prime Video.
