Netflix’s Cliff Booth Movie Sets IMAX Release Date

Netflix stepped in to secure the prime IMAX Thanksgiving release slot that was originally planned for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. Since the Narnia reboot has been pushed back to 2027, Netflix will now release a different film in IMAX during that holiday weekend.

Netflix revealed that a follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, currently known as The Adventures of Cliff Booth, will first be shown in IMAX theaters for two weeks starting November 25th. It will then become available on Netflix on December 23rd, perfect for holiday viewing.

Cliff Booth Returns to the Big Screen

As a film buff, I’m really excited to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood‘s Cliff Booth getting a theatrical release, even if it’s just for two weeks. Netflix sometimes puts potential Oscar contenders in cinemas briefly to qualify, but this two-week IMAX run feels different – it’s a big deal! Usually, they just drop their exclusive films directly onto the streaming service with little promotion, so this feels like a special treat for Tarantino fans like me.

Originally, “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” was planned for a big theatrical release, but now it will premiere on Netflix instead. This reboot of C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia” series is scheduled to be released on February 12, 2027.

Given the success of Brad Pitt’s previous films – Once Upon a Time in Hollywood earned nearly $400 million worldwide in 2019, and F1 recently brought in over $630 million – it’s a logical move for Cliff Booth to take over the former IMAX showing of Narnia. This benefits Sony, Warner Bros., and Apple Original Films.

Details about the plot of the new Cliff Booth movie are being kept secret, but the story will be set in 1977 Hollywood, which is described as very different from how it used to be. The film stars Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis, and Karren Karagulian, alongside the character of Cliff Booth, who is a longtime stunt double for Rick Dalton.

Netflix Seems to Be Changing Its Mind on Theatrical

Netflix has traditionally avoided releasing its films in cinemas before they become available on its streaming service, even if it meant potentially earning less money. But after losing Warner Bros. to Paramount, and following the release of titles like KPop Demon Hunters, the company seems to be reconsidering this approach.

Don’t expect Netflix to suddenly change how it releases movies. People inside the company say streaming is still the main focus. However, the decisions to show Cliff Booth in IMAX and give Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew a full theatrical release before it streams suggest Netflix is now open to sending certain big movies to theaters first.

Starting November 25th, you can see The Adventures of Cliff Booth for two weeks only in select IMAX theaters. It will then become available to stream on Netflix beginning December 23rd.
