has removed many tags when promoting their games.
Steam lets players easily find games by using tags. These tags help you search for specific features, like multiplayer or VR support, or to avoid games with things you don’t enjoy. It’s a quick way to see if a game matches what you’re looking for.
Steam Is Removing Tags for Major Franchises
Valve recently updated its tagging system, as announced on their website. Many tags have been removed, and others have been renamed to more accurately describe the content they represent. Here’s a complete list of the tags that were removed:
- 3D Vision
- Ambient
- America
- Blood
- Crowdfunded
- Cult Classic
- Documentary
- Drama
- Dungeons & Dragons
- Electronic
- Experience
- Feature Film
- Foreign
- GameMaker
- Games Workshop
- Illuminati
- Kickstarter
- LEGO
- Masterpiece
- Mature
- Movie
- Narration
- NSFW
- Roguevania
- RPGMaker
- Warhammer 40K
- Web Publishing
- Well-Written
Valve has removed tags for popular games like Dungeons & Dragons and Warhammer because they involve copyrighted material Valve doesn’t have the rights to. They’ve also removed the “Not Safe For Work” and “Mature” tags, meaning game developers now need to be more specific when describing potentially sensitive content.
Steam’s New Tags Are Much More Evocative
Valve has updated its system with more detailed tags, helping players better understand a game’s genre and what to expect before they buy it. Here’s a list of the new tags:
- Bullet Heaven
- Desktop Companion
- Organizing
- Cleaning
- Decorating
- Wuxia
- Xianxia
- Falling Blocks
- Espionage
- Samurai
- Zoo
- Wolves
- Capybaras
- Animals
- Cult
- Poker
- Language Learning
Some tags have been renamed to more accurately describe the games they’re applied to. If a game already uses one of these tags, it will be updated automatically. Here’s a list of the tags that have changed:
- Clicker is now Incremental
- Conversation is now Dialogue Heavy
- Dog, Fox, Vampire, Dwarf, and Assassin are now Dogs, Foxes, Vampires, Elves, Dwarves, and Assassins
- Pool is now Billiards
- Jet has now been merged with Flight
- Unforgiving has now been merged with Difficult
The recent tag updates are a good move, particularly for tabletop games. Although there are many role-playing games available, it doesn’t make sense to allow them to be officially compared on a large platform like this one.
Although the update might make LEGO games a little less visible, it’s likely a good change for Steam overall. The new tagging system is especially great news for developers of niche games – like those featuring capybaras – who will finally get more recognition.
