Grey’s Anatomy Universe Officially Expands With First Spinoff In 2 Years

ABC has unexpectedly added a new show to its 2026-2027 lineup. This marks the network’s first spinoff in some time and comes from Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, and Meg Marinis, who currently runs that series. Both Rhimes and Marinis will also write for the new, currently unnamed show, which has been ordered straight to series.

The upcoming series takes place in a hospital located in rural Texas. While it’s unclear how the show connects to Grey’s Anatomy, ABC hasn’t revealed any cast members, suggesting no characters from the original series will appear. The show is described as being a last resort for medical care in a remote area.

As a huge fan, I was thrilled to hear Marinis talk about expanding the Grey’s Anatomy world! She shared how excited she is to bring fresh faces and stories to life, all with the same emotional core and connection that’s kept us hooked on Grey’s for over twenty years. What makes it even more special is that this new series will be set in her home state of Texas! She expressed such gratitude to Shonda Rhimes for creating this amazing universe and how lucky she feels to contribute to it, and honestly, I feel lucky just knowing it’s happening.

The Grey’s Anatomy Universe Expands

Additionally, Shonda Rhimes is returning to write for the new Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, which is notable because she’s been focusing on producing for a while now. She and her production company, Shondaland, continue to have a deal with Netflix.

The upcoming series, set in Texas, will be the third spin-off from Grey’s Anatomy. Previously, Private Practice, which starred Kate Walsh (also from Grey’s Anatomy), aired from 2007 to 2013. More recently, Station 19 ran for seven seasons, from 2018 to 2024, and often featured characters and storylines that connected to Grey’s Anatomy.

Fans were thrilled to learn ABC is renewing Grey’s Anatomy for another season, but the decision wasn’t unexpected given the show’s consistently high ratings. Grey’s Anatomy is currently the most-streamed show on both Hulu and Disney+, and Nielsen previously ranked it as the second most-streamed series nationwide.

As a huge TV fan, I was really excited to see ABC lay out its plans for the 2026-2027 season. And then, the big news – they’re making a new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff! It’s awesome to know that both the original Grey’s and this new Texas-based show are coming back, alongside a bunch of other favorites. Basically, ABC decided to renew all of its scripted series – a win for everyone!

This is the second major spinoff added to ABC’s 2026-2027 lineup. It has already picked up .
