Martin Scorsese’s Unofficial ‘Casino’ Trilogy Is Finally Complete

Martin Scorsese is working on several upcoming projects, including a TV series that will finish his unofficial “casino trilogy.” While Scorsese has directed films in various genres – like the sports drama Raging Bull, the black comedy After Hours, and the thriller Cape Fear – he’s most famous for his movies about crime and gangsters.

Martin Scorsese’s career with crime films started in 1972 with Boxcar Bertha, but it was Mean Streets that really launched him in the genre. He went on to direct many famous gangster movies, including Goodfellas, The Departed, and The Irishman. One of his best, though often overlooked, is Casino. Released in 1995, Casino is based on the true story told in Nicholas Pileggi’s book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas, and features Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Sharon Stone. The film was both a critical and financial success and is considered one of Scorsese’s finest works.

Martin Scorsese rarely makes sequels. However, some of his films share common themes, actors, and source material, creating what fans consider unofficial shared universes. Casino is a prime example. It’s unique because, alongside a film Scorsese produced (but didn’t direct), it’s now being expanded into a TV show, also produced by Scorsese, called The Roman, effectively forming an unofficial trilogy.

The Roman Creates An Unofficial Trilogy Of Martin Scorsese’s Casino Thrillers

As of today, Martin Scorsese has several projects in the works. He’s directing Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in a movie based on Peter Cameron’s novel, What Happens at Night, and is also planning a mob film with DiCaprio, Dwayne Johnson, and Emily Blunt. He’s expanding into television as well, producing the Netflix crime thriller series The Roman.

Netflix’s upcoming series, The Roman, set to premiere in May 2026, will be an eight-episode drama starring and executive produced by Oscar Isaac. The show is set in the competitive world of Las Vegas casinos and follows Robert “Bobby Red” Redman, played by Isaac, as he fights to maintain control of the city’s most successful hotel casino and expand his influence.

Alec Baldwin, Betty Gilpin, and David Costabile will also appear in The Roman. Currently, the show doesn’t have a confirmed release date. With these early details, The Roman will likely conclude director Martin Scorsese’s unofficial trilogy that began with Casino and continued with The Card Counter in 2021. The Card Counter, directed by Paul Schrader, features Oscar Isaac as William Tell, a gambler haunted by his past as a former military interrogator.

Martin Scorsese produced The Card Counter, which shares common themes and settings with his film Casino. The Roman feels like a natural extension of these two movies, and it will be interesting to see how closely it aligns with or diverges from them.

The Roman Solidifies Oscar Isaac As One Of Netflix’s Best Attractions

As a big fan of Oscar Isaac, I was really intrigued when I heard about The Roman. He’s had such a fantastic run in movies – I loved him in films like Inside Llewyn Davis, A Most Violent Year, and Ex Machina, not to mention his time in the Star Wars universe. But he’s also been killing it on TV lately with shows like Scenes of a Marriage and Moon Knight. And just recently, I binged the second season of Beef – he’s seriously amazing in everything he does.

News that Isaac is joining the cast of The Roman came right after the second season of Beef premiered, solidifying his status as a key talent for Netflix. He’ll now get to showcase his versatility in The Roman, and his growing popularity – built on both film and television success – suggests he’s capable of drawing in a larger audience with his skill and charisma.

Martin Scorsese and Oscar Isaac seem like an unlikely duo, but if their new film, The Roman, is a success with both critics and audiences, hopefully they’ll collaborate again soon – this time with Scorsese directing.
