Karl Urban Candidly Fires Back At The Boys Season 5 Criticisms Ahead Of Series Finale

You know, it’s really interesting – Karl Urban, just like his character Billy Butcher, isn’t holding back when he talks about season five of The Boys. He’s pretty direct with his thoughts and isn’t afraid to voice criticisms, which I find refreshing, honestly.

Despite mostly positive reviews from critics, fans haven’t been thrilled with the latest season of The Boys. Many viewers online have expressed disappointment, particularly with the amount of screen time given to Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), what they feel are unnecessary episodes that don’t advance the plot, and a lack of action compared to previous seasons. This dissatisfaction led to episode 7, “The Frenchman, The Female, and the Man Called Mother’s Milk,” receiving the lowest IMDb rating in the show’s history, currently at 6.5/10.

Karl Urban responded to criticism of The Boys season 5 on Instagram, specifically to a post from @soupypoop69. He wrote, “Seriously? Your username is literally soupypoopy69, and just so you know, Eric Kripke wrote that because it’s what Clara would have wanted.” This last part references a line from season 5, episode 6, “Though the Heavens Fall,” where Soldier Boy explains his reasoning for giving Homelander (Antony Starr) the V1.

Laz Alonso, who plays Mother’s Milk on the show, responded to Karl Urban’s comments with laughing and crying emojis. Others pointed out how much Urban’s reaction sounded like his character, Butcher, even quoting Butcher’s signature phrase, “Oi.” Many also continued to share their thoughts and criticisms about the latest season, and frequently referenced lines about the character Clara.

Many fans feel that Soldier Boy’s storyline in season 5, particularly his comments about Clara, seems designed to promote the upcoming prequel series, Vought Rising, rather than provide a satisfying conclusion to The Boys. Vought Rising will be set in the 1950s and will feature Jensen Ackles returning as Soldier Boy, along with Aya Cash reprising her role as Clara Vought (previously known as Stormfront in season 2 of The Boys). The focus on setting up this prequel has overshadowed what should have been a key moment – Homelander receiving the V1 compound.

Although viewers seem more disappointed with the latest season of The Boys than in previous seasons, this isn’t unusual for popular shows as they wrap up. The final seasons of hits like Game of Thrones, Squid Game, and Stranger Things also faced a lot of criticism, even though they had been widely praised for years. Fans were so unhappy with the final season of Game of Thrones that a petition to remake it gained over 1.8 million signatures. Meanwhile, a popular online theory called “Conformity Gate” led many to believe a secret Stranger Things episode would actually be the true series finale.

The eighth episode of The Boys season 5, titled “Blood and Bone,” serves as the show’s finale and could spark new conversations. However, considering the mixed reactions to this season and the finales of shows like Game of Thrones, Squid Game, and Stranger Things, it’s unlikely to dramatically change opinions. While this isn’t the end of the The Boys universe – season one of Vought Rising has been filmed and is scheduled for release in 2027 – a spinoff series, The Boys: Mexico, is also in the works.

The Boys series finale releases Wednesday, May 20 at 3amET/12am PT on Prime Video.
