Since the first Star Wars film in 1977, the stories have largely centered on human characters, especially the Skywalker family. But the Star Wars galaxy is filled with many different alien creatures, created using makeup, computer effects, and traditional animation. This vast universe offers endless possibilities for creating unique characters. While we’ve seen lovable aliens like Grogu, the creative freedom has also resulted in some truly frightening designs.
It’s understandable to be scared of terrifying monsters like Rancors and Sarlaccs, but some of the more human-like alien species in Star Wars are still unsettling. This is either because they’re almost, but not quite, human – creating a strange, uneasy feeling – or because they remind us of creatures we already fear in the real world. While what’s scary is personal, some Star Wars aliens are definitely creepier than others.
Zabraks Were Designed to Terrify Star Wars Viewers
Zabraks, originally from the planets Dathomir and Iridonia, are arguably the most memorable alien species featured in the Star Wars prequels. When creating the primary villain for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, artist Iain McCaig based his designs on his deepest fears, as the character was described in the script as something out of a nightmare. While George Lucas found his initial design too frightening, McCaig’s second version ultimately became the foundation for the character of Darth Maul.
Darth Maul’s striking appearance – with his horned head and dark tattoos on red skin – made him look like a demon and left a lasting impression, even though he didn’t say much in the movie. However, not all members of his species, the Zabrak, are so intimidating. Zabraks from different planets, like Dathomiri and Iridonians, look quite different from each other, and there are also differences between males and females. This means some Zabraks, like Asajj Ventress, can appear much more human.
Pau’ans Became Even Scarier in Star Wars: Rebels
The Pau’ans are one of two intelligent species native to the planet Utapau. Though they first appeared in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, they became better known through the villainous Grand Inquisitor in Star Wars: Rebels. Pau’ans are easily recognized by their long heads, dark eyes, pointed teeth, and red markings on their faces. They also have long fingers with claws.
The dark side entity known as the Son, a Mortis God, appeared as a Pau’an, possibly to maximize fear. While Revenge of the Sith and Rebels created a memorable, unique look for the Pau’an species, the depiction of them in Obi-Wan Kenobi was noticeably less otherworldly.
Tognath Gave a Dark Edge to the Rebel Alliance
The Tognath are a newer alien species in the Star Wars universe, first appearing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. As described in Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide, they share ancestry with both the Kel Dor (the species of Jedi Master Plo Koon) and the Gand (the species of bounty hunter Zuckuss). This combination gives them a uniquely unsettling appearance, blending traits of mammals and insects into a truly alien form.
Tognath resemble humans, but have bodies covered in tough, beige exoskeletons. They can withstand incredible pain, leading them to commonly implant metal directly into their bodies. This is exemplified by Edrio and Benthic, twin characters in Rogue One, who had lenses and breathing devices built into their faces. Despite fighting for the Rebel Alliance, their modified bodies made them appear even more fearsome.
Aqualish Have Become Creepier Over Star Wars’ History
The Aqualish were among the first alien creatures featured in the original Star Wars films. These aliens come from the planet Ando, and in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, a member of this species named Pondo Baba caused trouble for Luke Skywalker at the Mos Eisley Cantina. Pondo was initially designed to resemble a walrus, but later Aqualish characters have looked more like insects, with multiple eyes and jaw-like mandibles that might scare someone afraid of spiders.
According to the Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare reference book, the Aqualish might be related to the Harch, a spider-like species featured in Star Wars: The Clone Wars as Admiral Trench’s people. While the Harch can be unsettling, their spider-like appearance makes them more understandable than the uniquely strange Aqualish.
Givins Lurked in the Background of A New Hope
The Givin are a species who briefly appeared in Star Wars, but their frightening appearance feels more at home in a horror movie. They have pale, skeletal faces with dark, empty sockets where their eyes and mouths should be, giving them a perpetually distressed look. According to the novel Star Wars: Heir to the Jedi, this unusual appearance actually evolved as a way to protect their internal organs from the difficult environment of their home planet, Yag’Dhul.
Although Givins look frightening, they are generally peaceful. They have a natural talent for math, which makes them skilled scientists and engineers. While many of the alien species in Star Wars aren’t considered scary within the story itself, the official Star Wars website confirms that Givins are intentionally designed to be unsettling to humans and similar species.
Starweirds Are Star Wars’ Cosmic Horror Monsters
While the aliens you’ve encountered might seem frightening, they aren’t naturally malicious or harmful—unlike the truly terrifying Starweirds. Originally designed for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game, Starweirds became officially part of the Star Wars universe in 2023. These creatures don’t have a home planet and are typically found drifting in the emptiness of space. They look like dried-up corpses covered in twisting tentacles, and are known to inspire fear in anyone who encounters them.
Starweirds are terrifying aliens from the Star Wars universe. They can either scare their victims to death or use their ability to control gravity and emit incredibly powerful, ear-splitting screams. Some stories suggest they aren’t just creatures, but actually physical forms of the dark side of the Force, making them arguably the most unsettling alien species in the franchise.
